1978 CB550 Pieces/Parts Hellride

Those lights look great, just might order a couple sets myself.

Nearly complete on the harness. Murray’s Carbs sent me a DOHC electronic ignition. This is programmed for the 650, but I had to adapt a 750 Hall effect plate. I’m pretty excited to delete the igniters and the advancer. To make it work, I adapted a shim I machined to run Suzuki rotors on my R100/7 Lester wheel. It had the perfect OD. I just needed to drill the stock plate mounting holes. Then I spaced the HE plate off the backing plate and machined the rotor to place the magnets.

I ran out of pin connectors, which will arrive today, so I hit the exhaust.

Thanks for the tip on the signal lights. I need a set for my Buell and these look like they will be perfect (and cheap).

He did! But this is a 650 engine in a 550 frame ;)

Well now I am heartbroken haha, I was hoping to hear how great the carbs were so I could go ahead and fork over some cash even though I haven't even torn my 550 engine apart. Also goes to show I didn't even notice it was a 650 engine... not that I would have seen a difference other than no kickstarter.

We have our first start and run in the books after a night of confusion and inability to get it to run. As to why I couldn’t figure out how to get it to run, I realized that my now having a lift means my fuel bottle is just low enough not to get good fuel flow. Yeah, I’m that stupid. I went through valve timing, ignition timing, checking for air leaks, swapping coils, checking wiring, etc. for a good 4 hours before I figured it out.
The Murrays Carbs/Rae-San ignition makes the ignition part pretty damn easy. No advancer weights. Just take everything off the advancer and slide their cam over the shaft. There are LEDs to indicate timing on the Hall effect backing plate, so just set the cam at the firing mark for 1/4, loosen the 10mm nut, rotate the cam until the LED lights at the right point, tighten the nut, start it up and check advance with a light. It’s programmed in, so it should be right where you want it. Easy. Done.

There’s a bit of smoke in the vid, because I need to machine a plug for the tach gear hole. With a digital gauge, that is gone and my open hole is splashing oil onto the headers. LOL.

;D

oh that's funny as fuck. man you must have been pissed off when you worked it out. but you know we're all down in the stupid hole with you.

Well... my first foray into candies produced some mediocre results. I’m too thick with the candy on the tank and I focused the candy too much in a stripe down the front fender. I’ll give them a few days, then repaint.

Regardless the red looks awesome. Good choice there. Gonna do any accent colors or striping?

Striping is the other thing I was going to try to do and not to fuck up on this ride. LOL. I bought a bunch of brushes and paint, so hopefully I'll get plenty of practice in over the next month or so. I definitely want some type of accent strip on the perimeter of the fenders and something that runs the crease on the tank. Maybe a line that circles the mid-tank crease and up along the crease at the peak. I also realize I should do lettering of some sort.
