1978 CB550 Pieces/Parts Hellride

Looking good man. This'll sound like a dumb question - what exactly is vapour hone/blast? A friend of mine has a set up that looks similar to yours Irk which I used to clean up my Comstars - it uses glass bead as the media and air as far as I can tell. Is vapour honing the same but with water instead?

Every time I've mentioned vapour honing here in Montreal I get blank stare replies, as if it's called something else around here.
Yes, it's with water and air. Glass bead is the most common media, since it polishes (peens) the surface. You can also blast with garnet or aluminum oxide to remove material, or soda to clean. You can also combine alumina and glass bead for a little bite but still a polish. Any part intended for powder coat (or paint) should not be glass bead, since it doesn't give the bite needed for the powder.

Gotcha, thanks. Not to peen before powder or paint, good to know. There's a lyric in there somewhere.

Is there much difference in surface finish between using air and water when using glass bead as the media?

i have a heater in my vapor hone just a simple immersion barrel heater and set the water temp to 80

takes about 40 minutes to heat it up

i have arthritis in my hands and the warm water feels really good when i work with it

Oh yeah, that sounds nice. I always turn a little hot in when wet sanding in the deep sink. Feels so much better.

Got the engine back together and added an oil cooler. Using a filter housing from a 550. Mocking up where the cooler goes. I’ll need to weld a bung and two hooks to set it right. Ready to fill it with oil and fire it up.
