1978 Suzuki GS550 gets a makeover

Hi there, let me start by sayin hello to you all, this is my second post here and my first cafe racer (or any bike) build. My name is Brian and I am 22 years old, and absolutely love the style of cafe bikes. Only problem is I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I'll be at the mercy of the almighty dollar.

I started this project spur of the moment, I had been looking at bikes that fit the image I had in my head of what the bike should be. I ended up finding a 78 GS550 for $650 on Craigslist in great shape and decided to buy it.

The look I wanted was inspired by old school show cars.

I apologize for the lack of pictures, my old phone died and took almost all of the progress pictures with it.

I started with a stock bike, that looked like this:

And within a couple of days, after I got all the bugs worked out (it started running on two cylinders shortly after the ride home), it looked like this:

Now I skipped a lot of things, but mainly I just chopped the frame at the back about 7" and welded in a couple of steel plates to mount the seat pan to. I bought some clip-on bars and 2.5" gauges for it, so I had to see how it would look!

The seat pan I made at work (we have a sheet metal shop so I could roll 14 ga stainless and tig weld it), so I eliminated all the hinges and locks on the seat so It can just use bolts now.

After I had everything mocked up the bike was taken completely apart, sanded, by hand, not sandblasted and prepped for paint. Every aluminum piece including all the bolts were all polished by hand on a bench grinder or with a drill. I decided on my color scheme and used house of kolors paints. My fiancées dad has painted a few classic cars and does a very nice job. So after weeks of sanding and buffing and fingers bleeding it was finally ready for paint. Here are some pictures of a couple of pieces that were polished, and the paint job i taped out.

Everything aluminum on the bike looked like this:

and after a little polish, a little elbow grease and a whole lot of time, everything came out really well.

The bike isn't finished yet, but it will be very soon. I'll post some pictures along the way of the frame and where it sits now.

If you look closely in the second picture you can see the turn signals. When I chopped the frame off it left two ugly holes, so I decided to make them useful and put bullet style turn signals in them. The frame had to be cut, heated and shaped then fiberglassed to match the shape and size of the turn signals. The frame is 1" I.D. And it had to be taken to 3/4" O.D. To do so. I'm hoping this project will be done this week, I've been working on it since late May of this year nonstop and it's so close I can taste it.

They're made for a Harley, I got them off eBay and they have no stickers or emblems on them anywhere. They fit perfect though and the cables thread right in.

Thank you. I won't let myself see the tank or seat on the bike until everything is done. I have an R1 taillight that fits perfectly in the tail fender that I still have to figure out as well.

Thank you! Had an interesting idea while cleaning the sprocket off. See what you guys think. I think it's kind of retro.

I'm going to repaint the side covers, not happy with the look they have. They need some white on them. But I'm going to get it running and finished then redo them just so I can ride it before the season ends.

Well it's almost done! Got the headlight mounted, the taillight working, the seat laced onto the fender, just a few pieces to buff and make pretty now.

If you're wondering why it's in a house, it's really hot out here and we brought it in the AC to work. Let me know what you guys think. It's been a hell of a build, lots of fun.

Points and condenser are on their way then this thing is done

Yeah I'm not sure what to do about that, I want to chop the stock fender up so it's a lot smaller and throw it back on. I just don't think I can make it turn out how I want it to.

Have you considered upgrading the front end? Your forks are 35mm with a single caliper mount, but the GS850 / GS1000 used 37mm forks with dual discs. Your current wheel would bolt up, and I know Tarozzi makes fork braces for them (although they probably make them for your current front end as well).
 
I've considered it, I did not know that the 850's used 37 mm but I have looked into various newer crotch rocket front ends. This build was on a budget though and I couldn't find the right deal. Now that I know that I may look for those. Thanks for the tip!

Welp, she's done. My first cafe racer turned out pretty well, I think. Let me know what you guys think. She might be for sale, too. Need to buy a house soon and the bigger the down payment the better, so if anyone is interested pm me.
