Been Around the Block
Okay it has now been just over 3 months since I picked this up.
Should have it up and running soon.
Bought from the original owner and still had the old style title.
Bike had not been ridden in a long time still had original date 08/78 coded brake lines.

Carbs off and getting refurbished. Someone did a major hack job on them needed major repairs.

Got the new O-rings in for the pass over tubes.
Radiator has been cleaned and painted.
Now to get the engine wiped down and cleaned off before the carbs go back on.
Have found a used stainless steel exhaust so I am very happy about that.

Carbs getting some tender loving care from Moose at Pistol Pete's.
Syncing them up really nice and a good idle.

Now they are home and once I get to that point I will hopefully have her up and running.

Full stainless steel exhaust and I have never heard of the company but they do a lot of exhausts and you can still get them.
This was sold on Facebook by a guy that was attached to our local vintage bike group.
He said it was a NOS but this is a newer exhaust and still available and only cost me $200.00 plus shipping list new is $764.00.
What I was planning would have cost me more than that plus this still has the stock exhaust look with the crossover tube.

Rebuilt the rear caliper.

Picking up freshly powder coated front calipers tomorrow
Getting the engine cleaned up and touched up.
Spent most of the day Sunday cleaning the bottom of the engine with a tooth brush.

This is the before picture of the engine it's not horrible but I wanted clean.

Waiting for the correct length rear stainless steel brake line to come in from Galfer.
The one I was sent was about 4 inches too long.

Once I get the engine cleaned I will install the sort of new exhaust and get everything back together.
Plus I bought some new handlebars that are a little shorter than stock.

Okay after many trials and tribulations since no one knows what they are selling anymore.
I have finally been able to get the taillight fixed and reassembled and ready to be mounted back on the fender.

Got home last night and installed the taillight assembly.
Also found out the lens was cracked so I just happen to have another that wasn't and replaced.
But I did get a nice surprise the previous owner already has LED bulbs in the taillight.

Also the new rear brake line was there waiting for me and will get that installed this weekend.

Okay I have started trying to get things put back together.
I have the nice clean radiator installed with all new hoses and clamps.
New petcock with all new fuel lines installed.
the front calipers are installed but I am not running the lines until I choose some handlebars.
Plus I have to ever so slightly pull the forks so I can install the new fork ears.
So will probably pull the front tire off so I can do that.
Also freshly cleaned and painted battery box going in.

Plus test fitting the new exhaust and trying to figure out the install of that.

So hopefully this weekend I can get the carbs back on the bike and get the new Dyna Ignition set up and finish the exhaust install and get her fired up.
Really want to get this bike back on the road.

I also found out someone has crimped in an inline glass fuse in place of the solid fuse so I removed that and soldered in an inline 30 amp blade fuse instead and it is also waterproof so no worries there.

Front brake calipers back from powder coating and installed.
Have to decide on a seat and handlebars before I run the new brake lines.

Thanks!
But it has been a work in progress over the last three months.
Bike wasn't in horrible shape but had been sitting at least since the late 90's in a garage.
Looked like someone had gotten it out and tried to fix the carbs and had no idea what they were doing.
Ended up with parts in the wrong place jets missing and main jets where they were not supposed to be.
Had a broken float arm and all of the floats were cheap knockoffs so all had to be fixed and replaced.

Carb repairs cost me more than the bike did. ;-)

I'm in the same boat. I should've sent mine off to be fixed up when I got it but I tried it myself. I eventually got tired of messing around with them and got a single carb setup.

John did you ever get that wing up and running or still work in progress?
Yeah best thing I could have done was send my carbs off to pistol Pete's.

Hope yours is going better.

It is a work in progress but I'm a lot closer now than I've ever been. Just gotta finish up a few odds and ends to get it back on the road. It isn't as pretty as yours is looking but maybe I can work on that part over the winter.

Worked about 3 hours last Sunday on the following. ;D

The left side is what they looked like before I started and the right is about halfway through the sanding process.

Here both fork legs have been completely sanded and hand polished.

This picture I was able to find a polishing bit for my drill and went to town with some Mothers Aluminum Polish.

So after finally getting finished with the front forks I slid them down and installed the repaired fork ears I had bought. S now I will have front turn signals.
I also mounted the front and rear tires after having new rubber installed. Both front and rear tires that were on the bike were at least 20 years old maybe older.

My new seat came in and I really think I am going to like it.
Yes this is one of the seat from Vietnam but I liked this style a lot better then most and it sits really nice on the bike.
Unlike the king/queen that was on there and didn't really fit and was crushing my nuts against the false tank.

So very happy with the fit.
Now I am testing handlebars.

Anyone know a handlebar that is a few inches shorter than stock and about the same pull back.
I have three different sets at home and so far none are very comfortable. They are mostly tracker style.
Plus if I use them the cables will be way too long and I don't want to get custom length cables just yet.

Thanks
CK

Okay just like the rear turn signals the fronts were just as big a pain in the butt.
Mainly because the 1979 year was the only model they used the rectangle turn signals and everyone cut the mounting tabs off.
So finding intact fork ears was pretty much impossible because the dealers removed the tabs when they installed the fairings.

So I finally found some that are a little different for the headlight mount but they will work.
Of course the turn signals fro Bike Master took major changes to work.

Once I get everything painted and we should be just about ready to go.

A while back I was looking around on EBay and noticed some custom built Works Performance shocks for sale.
So I asked them about the shocks and they said someone had ordered the shocks and then decided they didn't want them.
But they were custom built for his specifications so they said they would try and sell of their ebay account and what ever they got was his refund.
I ended up buying the shocks at 1/2 price of what they would normally have cost.

The main thing I asked was how the shock had been set up. He said they were set for rider between 160 & 220 and so I told him that I was on the high end of that and how would it work for me. They said the bike also had fairing and bags so mine is naked it should work perfect because I don't have the extra weight.

So I now have some very nice Works Performance shocks on my old GL1000. ;D
