1980 CB125 lighting issue

So just some context to how I got to this point, I bought this bike where they PO installed a 12v headlight and tail light, and I was assuming it was still running 6v. However, one day on the the way to work I ran over a pot hole, snapped the battery strap off and the battery pushed my side cover off and fell to the side, tearing off the positive wire. I reconnected it, got the bike going and 20 sec later, smelled something burnt and the bike shut off. Took it to a mechanic, got the bike going but was pushing 28 volts to the battery and he couldn’t figure out why. Weeks later, he seemed to fix the problem with the regulation of power and off I went.

Which brings me to my current problem. When on, my headlight and my tail light are not on simultaneously. I have to fiddle with the high/low beam switch to turn on one or the other which can change while riding. When the headlight is on, it’s WAY TOO DIM that i won’t even be able to ride at night. I was fiddling with it today and found out that if I disconnect the ground from the headlight, my tail light stays on as it should be in the first place. Once I reconnect the headlight ground, the tail light goes off and the headlight comes on still dim as all hell. I have no clue to what the problem is. Battery is new, some of the wiring to the battery and the headlight are new as well. Not fairly good with electrical but know some basics. Anybody have any insight as to what’s going on?

Difficult to guess based on the symptoms, but I suspect you're dealing with multiple issues. You might want to set aside a few days to access all the wiring and see what you don't have anything funky going on. Bad ground(s) would be a definite possibility but I would also check to make sure you don't have any wires connected to the wrong components, etc.
