1980 CB750C * Phase 1 Complete *

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build

I have some crappy progress to report. I was installing my battery box, which meant i needed to unhook the battery, i ended up unhooking the solenoid which i thought was no big deal. When i hooked it back up i had power to my lights but once i hit the starter button i would get only a click, then i would pop my 30A fuse. Now i am getting no power to my starter button but i still have lights.

I am at a loss.

Have you connected the 4 wires to the solenoid correctly? if not you have somehow caused a short somewhere.

I actually not sure if i do, how are they supposed to be connected?

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build

This is how mine is connected a CB750FA I pretty sure the wiring diagrams are the same for the 750C

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build

Thanks for the help notlob, the solenoid on mine is different but you pic will still help. I still haven't attempted to figure out the wiring problem but i do know that the starter is still good. If i jump the starter wire directly to the battery the bike fires up like it's nobody's business. Which lead to my next problem. My carb is leaking from the overflow spouts on the bottom, what does this mean that i have a stuck float? i have never worked on bike carbs before, any help would be appreciated.

More than likely the float valve not seating properly. Either crud in there or just worn.

I'm going to take the bowls off and give them a good cleaning and see if that helps, i also have a spare carb so i may be able to steal parts from it and make one set of carbs usable..............i hope

Remove the float pivot pin and clean the float valve and seat also check your float level while you are in there. Spay carb cleaner is your friend.

Thanks for the advice 8)

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build *leaky carbs almost stopped :)

I took apart the carb bowls, cleaned the float valve and seats. Also cleaned around the gaskets, i now have the leak contained to one bowl and as far as i can tell it is leaking from the gasket. I will try cleaning wear the gasket sits tomorrow, if that doesn't work i will steal a gasket from my other set of carbs. If those gaskets are no good i will use some gasket maker ( i've been given mixed info into using that on carbs, but the package says safe use with gas etc). I'm very very close to have the bike ridable again ;D

Nooooo.... buy a new gasket.
Seriously

yeah i've been told that already, i will source one out if i need it.

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build *leaky carbs almost fixed :)

i spent a little more time cleaning the leaking carb today before i head into work for the night. I have the gasket leak contained, now there is a small amount leaking from the overflow. How many of you guys actually run overflow hoses to a catch can of some sort like need in road racing? I'm guessing alot of these old bike will have a small dribble from time to time and i'd like to keep in contained.

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build *No more leaks..............for now :)

I am on my 4 days off now, so I got back to work on my bike. The results are............carbs are re-installed with no leaks while the bike is running or sitting with the petcock on. I am stoked, first time taking apart bike carbs ended in success, no to carry on with the build. I need to get this bike road ready, the nice weather has hit us here in the great white north with a balmy 20 degrees celsius.

Re: 1980 CB750C Budget bob build *No more leaks..............for now :)

I have decided not to use the battery box that i had made for me, i underestimated the size i needed to fit all of my electronics cleanly. So instead i am going to try and make some side covers that will be smaller and sleeker than the plastic oem ones. Here's what i have so far, they are made out of aluminum, i will be painting them black (i think).
