hello all,
I'm getting rid of the air box on my bike and installing pods. What do I do with all of the vacume lines going in and out of the box?!?!?! What needs to be capped and what needs to be filtered?

Thank you in advance.

The crank case breather needs filtered, most of the vacuum lines can be capped, unless you need one for your petcock.

If it is a California model with the upper breathers I believe that they can be safely capped as well.

Pics would help us I.D. which is which.

I route the head breather of my GS450 to the front sprocket so that any oil mist exiting the hose lubricates my chain. <G>

Bozz is correct, it sort of depends on why that tube is there. If they are going to say an inlet guide (like old CB77 hondas they would have to be filtered. If they are say a carb vent that's there for emissions reasons, it won't hurt the motor to leave them open and I'l let you decide about the environmental impact.

Crank or rocker box breathers need a filter from Autozone/Pepboys etc.

I will post pictures as soon as I am home from work. I'm not sure which one is the crank case breather (my termonology is terrible) so the pictures will help you as well as me. :D

Big fat black pipe is what the engine breather usually looks like. Carb breather tubes are typically 1/4" clear tube and Emissions stuff is closer to 1/2" black tube as a rule - not sure about your specific bike though.

here are the culprits

1. Head breathers. Can be joined with a "T" with a single hose leading away. Slight oil mist will be emitted by the head breathers. It would be a pretty long hose, so a filter is probably not necessary. Atmospheric dirt is not likely to make its way up that hose, IMO.

2. Vacuum hose. Probably leads to the auto shut-off petcock. Vacuum on the petcock is required for it to allow fuel to flow.

3. Crankcase breather. Much like the head breathers. Some oil mist from there. I would put a filter on it because it will be a shorter hose.

If the tubes just emit oil mist, couldn't I just plug 'em? Long tubes running to nowhere is something I would like to avoid. I already have 4+ hanging off of my carbs as overflows, lol

They are necessary to vent crankcase pressure. Plug them up and oil will start to seep out of oil seals or may even blow out a seal.
