1981 Suzuki GS750 Cafe Racer Build

+1 for the Shinko 712's I have used them on my last two builds... pretty improssed with their performamce for the price so far.

thanks I'll look into them. I'm working on the starter relay now and still nothing. Lights dim a little when I hit the switch to start it but nothing on the motor. Any help is appreciated.

Looking good so far! I am now following your progress.

I have Metzler tires on my bike. They have been pretty good to me, but they are the first set since the old tires that were on it when I bought it. Take my noob opinion for what it is, but the tires came highly recommended.

As I have modified the electrical components on my 82 gs650, I have found bad grounds to be the main issue that I have run into. I thought I killed my stator or starter motor last winter, but a bad ground and some blown wiring caused by the bad ground were the heart of the issue. Fixing the ground restored power to the bike. I had to leave the bad wiring to the pros at the time. The wiring was blown between my starter switch and the starter motor...not sure on the he exact details, since. I didn't do the work or ask too many questions since the bike was running and spring was in the air.

As always verify good clean connections. Positive battery cable to solenoid, solenoid to starter terminal. The starter gets ground through it's housing to the engine case, no paint there.. also engine case to frame needs to be clean. That's the high amp side, not the low "signal" green / yellow needs to have a good solid 12v to the solenoid when the starter button is pushed. Not only is there the starter button, but there is also the "starter disconnect switch". You HAVE to pull in the clutch lever to let voltage pass to that circut. Easily changed if faulty but usually the contacts are just corroded and cleaning will help.
Let me know if you need a schematic

Awesome. I'll check out some of the connections I have left. Hoosier, you said the engine grounds to the frame, should I be grounding the battery to the frame also? I thought the battery would ground to the engine through the ground cable on it. Does't the engine already ground itself to the frame through the bolt that hold it in place?

Never is a bad idea to run a ground to both the frame and the engine case. but yes... as long as the mounting points are clean metal to metal your engine and frame can share a common ground. Not only no corrosion, but not paint or Powdercoat... BARE betal, maybe a dab of dielectric silicon to keep them from corroding in the future.
I have take a large ring terminal on the negative cable and sandwiched it between the cleaned engine and frame mounting bolt point.

Ok thanks for clearing that up for me. I already sanded some sections so I can use them as ground point.

I ordered an aftermarket solenoid from Rick's because I couldn't figure out the wiring for the DCC universal one. I tried contacting them but no reply. Part should be in by monday. I recieved my new filter cones and decals yesterday in the mail. I'll probably begin painting the tank today.

ALSO! yesterday I picked up a new leather jacket. Alpinestars stunt. It's the older model, I think 2007. Bought it from a Harley guy who got it as a gift from his ex girlfriend and it didn't fit him so it's basically brand new. Not a cafe racer look but I like my skin. Also makes mom feel a little better about me riding so that's a plus :D

Alright guys! I got my rick's motorsport starter solenoid today so I popped it in and I got the bike turning over! However now I'm looking into another issue. I got the bike to start but it will only stay running if I hold the starter button. It's also running at really high rpms. It even shot some sparks/fire out of the muffler... never had this issue so I'm doing some research now to see what's going on.

I painted the tank and put in the decals too. It looks great. I also got some filter cones from ebay and tried putting them in today. I knew they would be pretty shitty since they were cheap but I didn't think you could make something soooo bad. They didn't fit, the clamps were too short, there was glue all over the edges, the metal was sharp as f**k and I cut my hands and was bleeding all over the place. So I neatly lined them up on the floor and stomped the sh*t out of them then they went straight to the garbage. It felt great.

I think the issue I was having was an exhaust leak since 2 of the bolts were broken off where they connect to the engine. I was so excited to try to start it that I forgot to fix those haha. Anyways, they should be fine now. I'll try to start it again in the next couple days.

Here are some of the pictures I forgot to upload. More coming soon!

Tank is painted now but This was the mock up last week.

Here's the jacket I got. Might leave it for when it's colder out. We'll see how it is.

I'm planning on sending the bike in to get it tuned and get the carbs adjusted soon. I adjusted the floats since they were a bit high but I'm still having the electrical issue. I finished polishing the tank it looks great. Also did the upholstery for the seat that will go on as soon as I finish painting it. Almost done guys. One more week maybe 2 and I can officially be a proud owner of a cafe racer :D

The tank after paint. Before and after buffing.

Absolutely LOVE the shape of that tank!!! And while some may bash you for turning over the tuning, it is good to know your limitations... but don't be afraid to push your boundaries outside your comfort zone... will the guy let you participate?

Thanks I put a lot of effort into it! I'm going to see if he's ok with me being there but I'm handing it over because I want him to check shims, compression test, and things that I either don't feel 100% about doing myself or simply don't have the tools for. I could buy the gauges for the engine compression and for the carbs but for that much money I can take it over to this guy and get view of how it's really done so next time I can do it myself.

Talked to the mechanic and he said he will call me early next week to arrange a pick up date. Soooo I decided it was a good time to clean the shop and tools (don't sand bondo inside, terrible idea). Maybe I'll start turning some wrenches on the E46 this weekend. I haven't touched it since I got the bike. Poor baby

makes me miss my baby. I had a 4 door 328 with the sport packeage and premium package. had to sell it. the woman who bought it (sherrifs deputy mind you) totalled it within a week. rolling in an E30 now. You know you can find a supercharger for that thing cheap right??? ;D

I actually got it in the fall and I've been so into the bike that I haven't looked up anything for the car. Which supercharger?

A while back in my Po-dunck little town the was an E31 for sale. I drove past it for a few weeks wondering what it was doing here... No body here could possible properly maintain one... then "POOF" it was gone.
Looked alot like this. Lessen learned: Ya snooze, Ya loose.
