Almost finished prepping the comstars, so had a go at masking up and trimming the polished details before paint. Well fuck that very quickly. Masking was no problem, but trimming the tape around all those curves was an utter nightmare and quickly scrapped as a plan. So found these rolls of what I think is pinstriping tape, el cheapo ($20 for 6 rolls, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm and 4mm wide) and will try that instead -
Also picked up two cans of SprayMax 2K hotrod satin black. It's not the cheapest option, but figured I won't need primer (I'm not painting on bare metal) and hopefully won't need a clear either. Plus CAA members get a discount at Napa so, 2K it is.
After about 50+ hours of prep I got the wheels painted over the weekend -
and after removing the vinyl tape and some acetoning on the tiny Honda emblems they came out good -
A lot of work dammit. The SprayMax 2K paint was a good call, and that vinyl tape worked an absolute charm. I bought the chinese cheapo stuff (6 rolls for the same price as one roll of 3M) and it worked perfectly. Incidentally, the polished details in the comstar are 3mm (1/8") wide, and the 3mm tape fits great.
Very nice... after my slush fund recovers from buying a 124" kit for my Road Glide I'm gonna be on the hunt for a CB750F or KZ750 for my next project (of course unless something else catches my eye during the hunt.)
Thanks guys. Turns out those bushings are no longer available, but somehow my local Honda parts guy sourced some. I didn't know this but apparently older parts become unavailable here in Canada before most other countries (supply and demand), which also means the parts guys are really good at finding obscure stuff. You meet the nicest people at the Honda parts desk.
Starting to scope around for a new exhaust, seems like options are limited to MAC and Delkevic. Any other decent options I should know about? I have a Kerker that came off this - the headers are fairly beaten up but the muffler is by no means awful.
Removed the swingarm shock bushings. The things had gone through powdercoat and decades of clobbering and looked battered and very un-rubberery - and I found some new ones for a few bucks so they had to go. Thanks to youtube I McGuyver'd a press consisting of a long M10 bolt (think it was M10 - essentially the bolt acts as a guide and needs to fit snugly in the bushing), a 15mm socket (same diameter as the bushing), a 22mm socket (wide enough for pushed-out bushing to fit inside) and a few washers...
Wrench on one end and impact driver on the other - as the press compresses the 15mm socket is forced into the swingarm, and slowly pushes the bushing out into the 22mm socket on the other side.
Do the heat and cool thing again. If necessary, I also use a threaded rod, put through the steering head/swing arm and put the bushings/bearings on either end of the rod sticking out, put big flat washers on the bushings/bearings and nuts on the ends of the rod. Carefully tighten the nuts, making sure the bushings/bearings are not crooked, until the bushings/bearings are seated.
Yeah Carbs that was the plan. Freeze them and heat up the swingarm, then reverse engineer the MacGuyvered press set-up. Would have picked up the new bushings from Honda on Friday but the CRV's snowed in under ½ metre in the back alley going nowhere fast.
I blew out the drive 3 times and still needed to lock the 4wd and turn off traction control to get up it. Will blow it out 1 more rime today after I do sway bar links on rhe Yaris. Lot of snow in short time frame
We were supposed to drive down to Toronto yesterday for an event - spent an hour shovelling the alley with a bunch of neighbours only to watch a brand new Range Rover Evoque get stuck in the stuff. So that put the kibosh on our weekend - more snow on the way and not a snow plough in sight. Going nowhere. Still, it is beautiful out there when the weather is like this - bright blue sky, no wind and minus 4F. Crispy.
Yep. That can suck. Got the links changed. Hopefully Yaris passes safety now. Shop has to swap one exhaust pipe I am not able to do at home and all should be good
Yeah, here too. We were just saying how mild this winter had been and how easy we'd had it. Then this weather arrived and fucked everything up. Shoulda known.
