I've been on here reading and learning for several months and figured I should start my first café build thread. First off I was given this bike for free because my brother-in-law was moving and needed it out of the garage so sweet right.
The plan: Break the bike down to the frame, keep the electrical in place (don't know much at all about electrical), then clean and paint the frame, wheels and motor and reassemble. So far I've broken it down to the flame, welded the upswoop on the back and mounted some seat mounts for the trimmed down thruxton seat. The problem I'm having now is trying to find a AG battery that will fit under the trimmed down hump which I think I won't find. (Stock battery is 12v/12ah 210 cca) So it looks like I might have to go lithium and upgrade the regulator.
Questions: Ok so at this moment I'm about to start cutting off the remaining tabs and was curious if I can also cut the metal braces that go between the frame that held the battery mounts in place. There's a plate on the rear of the triangle and front of the triangle. Does this affect the strength of the frame? Thanks guys.
Also, anyone have any other ideas of how I can run an AG battery while keeping the electric starter without seeing the battery in the middle triangle? Can't seem to find any AG smaller than 6X4.5 inches which is to big to hide under the seat.
So I've made some progress on the build with the wheels and frame painted. Ordered upgraded sprocket, chain and new rear shocks I plan on installing this weekend. I want to go for a matte black look with possibly a bare tank. There are several dings in the tank so if I go bare would I pretty much have to live with them? Anyone have any ideas for a better looking tank that would fit with little modification on the GS? Also because I removed the side chrome pieces that were attached to the swing arm bolt now the bolt is to long. Would I need to find a shorter bolt or extend the threads and trim the length?

I actually read other people using bedliner spray and I have to say it turned out awesome and hides ALL imperfections! It has a slightly rough texture and a matte finish. I think having gross black parts will make a good contrast. I'm trying to figure out what type of tank would look good or try to go with the one I have now.
Welcome to the world of Zooks! Personally, I like the looks of the E models tank, I have an L and it is more teardrop shaped. Looked for a tank more along the lines of what you have from any donor and found the triple backbone on our Suzuki frames is W-I-D-E... not too many other tanks will fit. Even had a tank off and GS850G and it was too narrow. :
Yes, you should be able to tap longer threads onto the swingarm bolt and cut the extra thread length off, but you might be hard pressed to find a die. Not impossible, just may not be at your local hardware store. But don't those also hold the exhaust? If you are using the stock exhaust, I think you will have to come up with a mounting solution. if you are going a different route with the pipes never mind.

Even though I would rather have a 78 tank on instead even on ebay most of the ones are looking rough and I'm not sure how much modification would be needed. Looks like I might just stick with it. I was thinking of running it bare, but there are a few dings that I'll have to live with.
I mounted the trimmed down thruxton seat from DCC last night which looks pretty good, but the stock tank I'm still iffy on. Anyone have any ideas of another tank that would look better with little modification?
The tank I listed before I think would look better, but do you think it would fit? If not what type of modifications would I need to make? I also like the below tank which says is from the L version of the GS750 that might require less modification.
Honestly man, I don't know how your frame is shaped at all. If you want measurements of a GS850 tank I can give them to you. But once you get away from stock tanks, anything can fit. It becomes a matter of how far you're willing to go to make it work.
What model is your gastank?
I have a 77/78 gs 400 tank if you would like to trade?
It looks the same as the one u linkd to,but mine is rustfree and with one minor dent after the left forkleg.
Here's a picture of my frame and measurement. The connector in the back is just a single bolt and the measurement from the front connect to the rear bolt is 22 inches.
The frame paint is actually bedliner. It turned out really well and hides all the imperfections.
