400four, Dueling Banjos

Yes, Paint base, add decals, burnish them as smooth as possible. I got some small air bubbles under mine...sucks as they show through. Then clear. After 24 hours the Spraymax can be wet sanded. 1000-1500-2000 then polished. I used Meguires 105 then Ultra polishing wax.
Thanks for the inspiration Trek!

i plan to paint my cb550f tank and covers Orange, Lively if i can get it or a RAL thats near.

question, did you sand/polish the base coat prior to clear?

Hey Trek, nice work man once again! Question, there's another great build going on at the moment (HerrDeacon) who's just posted some great before and after photos of some polished paintwork that also looks great. His process is similar - just wondering if you also use a dual action polisher after sanding, and in which case what kind of polishing pads on the polisher do you use? I've never used one of those dual action polishers before and just trying to get the skinny on them.

Thanks my man and yes a dual polisher. My wife bought a cheapy kit from Mequires it works freaking amazing.
Its nice and small just right for tank and tins...
She got extra pads, both red (heavy cut) and yellow (polishing).
I put it on the dewalt cordless and wow, in a few minutes the paint is like a mirror.
I couldn't believe the results.

No sanding base or color. I sanded primer smooth. Then spray base, color and 2k clear. Sand and polish 2k clear after 24 hours.
Do not over sand the clear coat. You will see as you sand and wipe, when all the gloss is gone and its smooth. You're done sanding. I also use a stiff sponge behind the sandpaper. Dont cut through it to the paint or stickers. Its easy sanding and it dont take much time.

Went for a spin down the road and back over last weekend. Running super.
Had a reaction twixed the silver base and color coat on the headlight cowl.
Wet sanding it all down now. ugh.
Hope to re-spray this weekend...then she will be road ready.

So Eric... what color did.you end up painting the tank? (Or did you talk about that and I just missed it?)

I will post the finished pics after cowl is re-sprayed and she is officially finished. Hopefully this weekend.

Thanks Trek, i’ll follow that advice for my Scruffy Racer tank and panels.

on the subject of DA polishers i saved up for a Flex Pxe 80 cordless rotary/DA polisher which is excellent for small bike panels.

Well I didn't get very far on the cowl.
However did get my carrier finished. haha
She developed a small hesitation on take off...pulled carbs found pilots on #1 and 4 had some flakes of crap in them.
Double checked floats, sync, temp gun on headers and played around w the Colortune. Now running cherry.

Nearly there Trek, and like the look of that front fairing a lot. My mate has something similar on his SV1000 - I sprung for a china-cheapy for my CB to see how it looks.

It took a while for me to get used to the look, but now I really like them.
Front end looks naked and unfinished without it.
After that mounted pic was taken I shaved about 1-1/2" off the top. I didn't care for the height of it.

Thanks also for the info on the DA polisher - I'll look into that set up you've got there. It obviously works really well.

How do you like your Carbtune and Colortune? A friend of mine had the Colortune tool but I never got to try it out - the Carbtune tool looks pretty easy to use. I'm from the UK and I think that's where these are made - I have a birthday coming up and may put these on the list. On the list? They'll be the list.

Yes! the Carbtune sync tool is from UK. It works great! Better than the gauges. The Colortune, is fun "science". I could see some difference between the 4 cylinders, and adjusted. The cheapy DA from meguiars with my Dewalt battery drill works amazing. I didn't expect much...I was blown away. Along with the 105 and Ultra polish wax.
