I believe you are correct sir! Hadn't thought of that. That 4 lobe unit worked like a normal single point unit x 2, though I never fooled around with one. I think higher rpm was the goal like you say though the rubbing blocks should last twice as long as well as the contacts. "double life" rings a bell, but I don't remember that being the claim to fame. I remember the 8 lobe as a pita to get right, though I had a whole lot less experience back then!

Got the bike running today! As it turns out, if you leave the little bolt and washer that holds the points cam and advancer onto the cam it will jump out of time and make it impossible to start and get running again until you figure that out.
Nothing like timing an engine perfectly, knowing it was done correctly and chasing a problem around because your work was undone by a simple bolt.

Bike starts up great, just a tap of the starter button and it roars to life.
Only problem is that of you give it some throttle it takes a second or two to return to idle, I'm sure that's either a vacuum leak or carb sync. I wasn't able to sync carbs because the set of gauges I have the needles bounce all over the place widly, ill have to get some flow restrictions or something but I'll have to figure that out next week. First time I get to ride the bike is the 17th!

I am looking for suggestions for a mount for the rear... thinking a knurled thumbscrew or something, right now it's just a brass spacer in there which holds it in place but not down. I was gonna do a wingnut but there isnt enough space

Dzus fastener? You can get them with a flathead or wing style. Not sure if it would fit for the application, but they are slick.

You were lucky my friend !, when i didnt tighten up a bolt it all went horrible as you know !

On the high idle i’ve found on mine that throttle cable tension can be a factor, ie tighten up the return cable.

Yea I was quite amazed how quickly your project progressed compared to mine... but delays happen and it just gutted me to see what happened. Live and learn I guess.


As for return cable.. I dont have one, I do have a backup return spring on the throttle cam though, and it snaps back with the force of a mouse trap.
I'm certain it's the carb sync, the left cylinder is dragging the right cylinder with it due to how far they are off... I can feel it in the exhaust pulses
 
Put the spare main jets into vacuum lines as restrictors.
You'll have around 300v reverse EMF at points, tickles a bit ;)
Whats max diameter and thread of seat nut? isn't a big deal to make one in 6061

1/4-20 or m6

I bought a knurled nut threaded for #10 machine screw, will drill and tap to m6

Is this reasonable ? Modifications were done on a cb125, would this hold up to ~42hp ??

Depends on how you use the clutch, hard abuse (hard starts, wheelies etc) with 42hp I would expect it to brake but take it easy, why not?
 
Wouldn't most of the forces be on the plates anyway? I always thought that basket just kinda held stuff together...
 
Since the basket is holding the plates and power is transferred from the gear on the crank to the gear on the countersprocket shaft, I'd say the basket is feeling quite a bit of torque.
 
indeed, that big gear outside the basket is what drives the trans from the crank - it holds all the power

but all the wear or damage I have seen to these clutches are in the plates or the basket getting sawtoothed from the plates like below

Yeah... I think I'm picturing it now?

Crank turns the primary and outer basket and power is transferred to the main shaft through the plates and inner basket... right?
