79 CB750K, RCB clone-ish build

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

Paint your frame the same color as the inside of your bikes, IMO, otherwise it is an accent color that isn't tied into anything else. Otherwise the white with grey is a pretty good combo. You could even go with a metallic grey to give it a little more pop.

Got a picture of my Manx style DOHC tank from Gage Werke Composites. When it arrives I can start fabbing the seat location and finalize the battery relocation under the seat.

Now that is a nice tank. It would probably fit lower since its a DOHC, no more high tanks.

Typhoon, it should fit like a stock tank. Gage Werke supplies epoxy and aluminum clips to position it on your frame, but the bottom is shaped to fit a 750/900 3 bone frame. In other words, it should ride in the stock location.
Here is a shot of the bottom...

UPDATE!!! AND ITS NOT MS PAINT!!!!!!!!!!

Well, After a few nights of muckin about with scissors, card board and a marker I made my templates for my panels and trim. Card board is AWESOME! its dirt cheep, easy to cut and tapes together very well. Its disposable and very traceable. Lets see if I cant get them cut out by tomorrow. This is also most of my exhaust from the bike sitting the side and pretending to be a custom 4 to 4 exhaust... Bueller?

This is my sub frame that will be holding the tank up. It is just glued together for now for more mock ups as I need to alter a few pieces to work properly.

Where can I get four slip on mufflers in this style? CHEEP!?

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

Ebay! This tank dealio what is preventing it from sitting lower? Sorry not real familiar with the hondas. You might have mentioned it already and I missed it. But it just seems like it would be easier for you to make it sit lower than to do this extra fab work. Just my .02
Peace travis

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

You see that metal pan with the holes sitting where the tank goes? That's a copy of the bottom of the tank. It will sit no lower than that unless I play chop shop with the tank. You can better see this from the last picture.

I made my cut outs from my templates today. I wont bother with pictures until they are formed to the frame. The side triangles are aluminum, the seat and under tank ones are mild steel so I can weld them easier.

Lets see what tonight has in store.

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

Too long :(

I'm on the look out for four mufflers, 20" long with an ID of 1 7/8" at the front and around 4" at the rear...

Thanks guys.

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

1 7/8 is quite large usually you can find them in 1 3/4 and thats it. if find them any bigger let me know.

Have you checked JCWhitney.com?

http://www.jcwhitney.com/jcwhitney/product.jcw?nval=0&statenval=200008971+1968+1101014681&productId=2006468&shopid=100003&pageid=13&skuId=142715&id=3334551

Their short megaphone mufflers are 18" long, fit over 1.75 pipes, end diameter of 3.75". And the cap on the end just has 3 screws holding it on if you want to remove the cap. Little pricey at $59 apiece though

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

I think you could ebay that tank and get real close to being able to afford a tank designed to fit the triangulated backbone on your bike. I think your rushing your project personally, and in the end will not be happy w/ the results. I have a feeling its going to look like a jigsaw puzzle. Not all parts are expensive all the time. Ya just gotta hunt.
As a matter of fact. A tank from a suzuki gt 380, 500 & 750 will more than likely fit. They work w/ the same style back bone. And some of the early ones are really cool "Toaster" style tanks w/ chrome sides and shit... Anyway, I am not trying to be disrespectful, just honest. Louie

well, It looks nothing like the the first concept picture. I understand where you are coming from, and it is a little rushed, I want it out for may/ june.

I'm just really digging they way its turning out myself. I'm going to check out a local old brit bike guru and see what he has for pipes. I may try to snag the 79 750F swing arm with rear disc in a little while or leave it for next year.

Just bought these:

Hey, If you dig it that's what really matters, right?

Second that... Just trying to be helpful. Sometime I know I need a voice from out side of my tiny bubble

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat" (more pictures than talking)

Now here's one... I love the spoked rims. I know of a 79 CB900F (Super Sport) The engine as I'm told is seized but it has the dual front and rear disc brakes. As far as I can tell (limited) If I want this kind of brake set up I need to go to the comstar rims (ghey) and have to swap over my tree (not too bad) but might not be so bad if they were gold... Opinions?

The bike also has hydraulic rear shocks with the little piggy back reservoir, adjustable forks and an oil cooler. Some very trick parts all for the low low price of $500.

Ideally I want the only thing 79 CB750K about it to be the vin.

I have to agree with this. I'm all for honesty, so I'll just say what I think. I think the high profile of the tank being raised like that looks bad. It will take too much "filler" to bring it down to seat level. Hell, keep the tank and find another, or like Louie said, Ebay it and buy one that fits. You'll be WAY happier in the end if you do it right the first time, I love the Zuk GT tanks BTW.

Trust me I went through the same thing with Gretta and haggled and waited and sat around until I finally found the right tank. It will happen. But hell, it's your bike. If you like it, I say rock it. Just like Louie said, I like to hear opinions from outside of my tunnel vision. I get really stuck in my head, and the guys on this site really helped me to stay away from some bad decisions.

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat"

Ok, can anyone suggest a tank then?

This was where I was thinking:

Alas, the gap over the engine...

Still, with the seat as high as it is, my feet are still very flat on the floor.

Re: 79 CB750K Dunstall Cafe. "Basement Rat"

Thanks, I see what our sayin about the under tank templates with the existing one being a little longer and one on the front. When I made these good ones there was a a pile of tape on there so they are all very straight and line up along the center of the frame tubes. I'll work on that tonight after I get tired of messin with the seat.
