79 CB750K, RCB clone-ish build

I'm new here and I'm trying to build a CR out of my 79 CB750k. This was my first bike I bought when I was 17. I joined the military and everything got put on hold for a few years. Last winter I got it together and rode it for the first time. This winter I have "Other" plans for it. I will let the pics do the talking.

Its an original Dunstall fiberglass tank with one of Carpys FG fairings. I made a sub frame for the tank to bolt to my bike without heavily modding ether the tank or the bike. Right now Im working on the seat and tail. I already posted this in the FNG section and will start a thread here sharing everything I'm doing.

The tail... I have two ideas for it... I Dont know if I want to make a soft one part of my seat or make a fiberglass copy of the back part of my tank for a matching profile... I bought some plaster yesterday to make a mold and eventually a copy. Carbon fiber?


So for all those interested, here's the ass in progress:

Cut the front end of the seat off to account for the longer tank.

But I have to ask; How in the hell are you going to get it out of the basement? :)

Same way it got in there. Take it down to the frame with engine then rebuild.

It was F**ing heavy! even down to the frame/ engine. My buddy said "I don't care what the good neighbor rule is, your finding someone else to take it out".

I built my 450 in the basement , then tried to wheel it up the stairs together, that didn't work and we put a few holes in the walls, then I stripped it down to frame and motor and my buddy helped carry it outside. That was not fun, but it works when you got no garage.

Nice build so far.

Pending how the build goes, I MIGHT take the engine out to get it out of the basement. If I have time before the snow melts I will try to detail the engine and frame. I need to get the big fab stuff done first. Riding season starts here around mid May.

I carried a cb650 engine downstairs by myself, the other one is waiting outside till I get some help some help. lol

Looking good so far. I'm not really feeling the seat being staggered below the tank like that. The seat profile I do like though.


Is that white part on the tank photoshopped or is it a removable part?

the tank looks like its sitting up too high on the frame. Just my .02.

Your right, that is cardboard. It till be a hellovalotta work to make the fiberglass extend down there. Mold the skirt with clay, make a negative with plaster then using that to make my fiberglass skirt.

The seat will be as high as the lowest part closest to the tank plus an inch. From there it will be parallel to the ground until the tail hump.

When I get back to work I will use the band saw to properly cut the metal edge off the seat. I will probability rivet some snaps on the bottom to hold the cover on. I will be getting some bating (trick I picked up here, AWESOME!) and material from a friend and recover it myself. Also when I'm at work I can weld my tank sub frame together. As you can see, there is a long bolt holding my tank parallel for mock up.

Did some more slicing on the seat, Its very close to where I want it.

Ya, I gotta say... thats a lot of stretch in the arms man. That tank needs to be lower. Your arms are stretched to the max...

Sorry, it just doesn't look right.
You would probably be better off selling Dunstall tank and getting a tank that fits that frame. (or use top as plug and make new base from Honda tank?)
If your going to the trouble of building mold, you may as well go all the way and build tank, you'll know what its made of plus modern epoxies are 'fuel proof' ;D

No, my arms are not stretched to the max, I can still turn from stop to stop. Must be the angle you see my elbow at.

Heres how far I got tonight.

NOTE, be sure you know where your seat pan sits/ attached when you mock it up... I thought the brackets attached on with the shocks, they dont. I will need to make some new brackets... easy enough.

I would try and use a cable come along. you can use a large heavy duty hook on the opposite wall at the top of the stairs. Attach the body of the cable come along to that. have a friend do the ratcheting while you guide it up the stairs. Then when you are done, you only have to fill a hole 1/4" big. If you have wall paper, take a razor blade and cut an X in the paper before you make the hole for the hook, when you are done, fill the hole and let it dry, then use Elmer's on the back of the paper and hide the hole.

Good idea, I could have used that, I have a door frame right across from the door to the basement and I could just put a 2x4 across it with pads and use the come along.....next bike.

I have been thinking about that. Problem is its a rented place. If I got a ramp there, I would still need to walk somewhere behind it to hold it upright, kinda hard with a ramp in the way.

With the 2x4 across the frame, that's cool but I could see problems when it got to the top.

I'l just get another buddy and do it one step at a time. It will be easier, the frame wont be -30 and covered in frost.

I think I will also have a strap tied to the frame and someone at the top of the stairs keeping the slack "just in case"

Right now with the bike I think I will paint the black part of my rotor and the gear on my rear wheel gold, black spokes? grey forks? bobbed front FG front fender? polished engine side covers, cleaned chain of course.

Should I paint my caliper?

Does anyone make an extended swing arm for these bikes?

I don't think anyone makes an aftermarket extended swingarm for your bike. Your best bet is going to be one of two things: A) Buy another swingarm for your bike and make the cuts, slug it and weld it all together to make a longer swingarm. You might be able to do this without another swingarm if you could find the right kind of tubing. Also you could take your swingarm to a fabricator/welder and tell him what you want and pay him to do it.
B) You could try to find out if there was ever anyone who made an extended swingarm to fit your bike and then try to source that part. This could take time and I don't know that they ever made an extended swingarm for your specific bike. You could also find out if swingarms from other bikes could be made to fit your bike, then find out which ones are what lengths and buy the one that fits how far you are wanting to stretch your swingarm. This may also include fabricating mounts for shocks if the swingarm is from another bike.

I can do the work myself, its the technical aspects I'm worried about. maybe I shouldn't be.

If they are just a tube, I could make a jig to hold it at my desired new length, cut and weld in another piece of machined tubing with an OD just smaller than the ID of the swing arm.

Thinking out loud about it... Its not that bad... will of course keep all of you posted.

Next year I might try to make a new one out of aluminum.
