79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer - SHE'S DONE!!

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

Bought a new coil because the 'original' one was cracked and the plug wires were short & hard to maneuver in the coil's new location. Also GSX-R front peg mounts.

Rear view - a bit wider than I'd like but so be it.

Coil mounted under fuel tank tunnel.

Added 2 fuel feed lines out of the tank. [before cleaning them up - pinhole was fixed]

Drawing up the rear set levers.

Brake side done. Temporary until I figure out if I'm going to change the rear wheel.

There's a vintage motorcycle show at the end of the week and I'm looking forward to riding this thing out there. I'm trying to button up some of the things that are necessary to making that happen. Got a gas cap on its way from Summit Racing. I need to sort out the wiring and get a front master cylinder to make this happen.

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

Nice work so far.

You might want to consider beefing up the swing arm. The change to mono shock has introduced bending loads into an arm originally designed to just locate the axle.

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

"Nerdsports" -- awesome.

But seriously (my first post -- i was going to wait until i pick up my CB77 to introduce myself) you need to get your nerd hands on some FEA software and run the numbers on that swingarm. It's going to break, bend, fail, catastrophically or otherwise, unless you reinforce it somehow. I understand what you were saying about not being able to get the shock to lay down more because of the weird hump in the frame, but you can certainly build up the legs of the swingarm with another tube, triangulate it, then run a reinforcement to the lower shock mount.

Since you're SERIOUSLY bucking trends, you could even run the reinforcement UNDER the swingarm. That would be easier too, since you wouldn't have to worry about the reinforcement interfering with the shock.

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

what did you have to do to get that cbr front end on there?

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

Just a suggestion... i sketched your current setup from memory, and added in green pen the brace. Your rear subframe looks great, so i'm sure this would be simple. The perspective is off in the bottom picture, but you probably get the idea.

I want to thank everyone for their comments. It really keeps me motivated and helps me stay on track. Seriously, thank you!

Remove old one. Remove stock bearing races. Install new tapered roller bearing races and new tapered roller bearings. Install CBR front end. It's the same diameter stem so they're pretty much interchangeable.

Juanito!!! You're awesome man. I greatly appreciate your help with the drawing. That's actually what I've wanted to do but I'm still unsure whether I want to put that much work into a swingarm that I might be tossing out. I'm working on the rest of the bike and waiting to find a suitable rear rim (17" x 4" width) to match the front end.

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

sport bike swing arm homie!! love this bike build so far, match the rear wheel with the front from whatever year cbr you pulled the front end from. cheers

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

hell yeah, seems like all the honda stems are about the same. thanks

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

Hey, don't mean to question your aptitude because everything you've been doing so far is much more advanced than anything I've attempted but I just want to ask. The steering stem length also needs to be the same size or very close so there's enough thread but not too much that the top nut won't fit tight against the upper triple. Did you have to add any washers under the top nut or in between the lower triple and the lower bearing?

If the swap is that straightforward without custom machining, I may be jumping on it too if you don't mind.

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

Moved to a new warehouse so I haven't done a whole lot lately.

Engine out to tuck some wiring through the backbone. Im mounting the CDI and voltage regulator behind the engine where the center stand was.

Handlebar switch housings. Left side is headlight hi/lo switch - right side will be starter button (not pictured obviously).

The air cut off valves are in pretty bad shape. Probably ordering new ones.

Re: 79 Honda CM400T - Nerdsports Racer

I was no longer feeling my original idea of running the dual Honda Ruckus headlights so I changed it up.

Welded together.

Machinist friend of mine (SOKfab) spun these suckers for me.

Got the bike running again. So stoked!!!

Finishing the XL500 tank. Stock fuel cap bung was bigger than the new Meziere cap. Had to weld in a plate for the new cap.

Finally got around to installing the stem bearings.
