82 Virago 750 Cafe Racer (Done!)

Re: 82 Virago 750 Project Cafe

Update.

It's been slow going all weekend. Re-writing for my keyless ignition. Also extending some wires to get everything to fit under the subframe and battery box. Wiring for the relocation of the battery.

I have had success as the wiring is right and I bumped the starter and checked lights, signals, etc.

Also got my bracket made for the speedo.

Re: 82 Virago 750 Project Cafe

I have been sloooowly getting things together. Right now I am having clutch and front brake issues. I was putting on the clutch cable and somehow broke the push lever assembly on the side case. Thank god for Amazon Prime! Where it would take over a week to get something from Partzilla or even the local Yamaha dealer, I will have this tomorrow! I can't tell what the issue was. I got the cable on and pulled the lever and it snapped. I have taken the cable on and off at least 6 times since I have owned this bike and never had a problem. I did take the side cover off to replace the shift seal, but I read through the manual and didn't see anything about making sure that the clutch lever assembly had to be lined up special. The only thing I found was the fantastic way that you have to hold the starter gears in place and try to get the cover back on while dealing with a very powerful magnet. Not fun when you are working alone...

The front brakes have always been a problem since I owned this. I had them rebuilt after I powdered them. I installed all the parts, filled with fluid, and tried bleeding them, but there is no fluid coming out. If I remove the banjo bolt and line at the MC and put my finger over the hole, when I pull and let go of the lever, I feel air push on my finger and then suck it back in. I have one of those HF brake line vacuum bleeders, and if I hook it up, crack the bleeder screw, pump up the vacuum to like 15psi (I think its psi), and pull and release the brake lever I can watch the needle move down every time I pull and release. Seems like it has no problem pumping air, but it ain't moving fluid??

Anyways...Speedo mounted. I will end up powdering it. I think the bracket came out well. I can share the drawing if anyone that is cursed with a Virago wants it...lol

Electrical is finally done. Who knew that relocating the battery and license plate would be such a pain. Not to mention the keyless ignition...after hours of solder, heat shrink, tape, snakeskin, split loop and cable ties, it is done!

Shout out to my co-worker Zion for making this on his mill.

No damage when it fell off of the stand?

Some small scrapes, but the left horn was a smashed. So it seemed that it took the brunt of it. The scrapes are fixable. I got it up there and wiggled it to make sure it stayed. Turned to get the strap and I did get distracted for about 2 minutes longer than I should have. Over she went. It could have been a lot worse, but a lot of things were not tightened down, so they moved when it came in contact with the floor. The joys of working alone...

Re: 82 Virago 750 Project Cafe

At least you didn't get stuck under it, ha. Scrapes are repairable, and a horn is replaceable.

Years back my 400F fell off of a milk crate and landed on me. I was too afraid to roll it off me (didn't want to damage it at all). Luckily my cell phone was within reach.

Re: 82 Virago 750 Project Cafe

Just read through this entire build. It's really looking great! Huge thanks for the parts list! Definitely giving me ideas for the 400 Maxim that I'm starting.

Keep up the good work!
Now back to studying for the GMAT...... D:

Looks like fun to me, sir.

It has been a blast. Been riding all weekend. Rode it to work today.

Had a few issues to take care of. Found that my right side gasket was leaking oil all over my new shiny parts. Easy fix as I had the gasket already. The master cylinder is still a little wonky, but I have front brakes. Carbs are all tweaked and it is running better than it was last summer. The starter is very embarrassing...but that will wait until winter. I do have a few more little things to powder, so it isn't totally finished yet

Now it's time to switch my attention to my boat...lol

Riding through town today. Passed the local Auto Parts store/bar/Harley hangout (yeah that kind of town).

Two burly Harley dudes out front and one points at me and says "check that out" to his comrade (I can read lips) and gives me a thumbs up.

I give a thumbs up back.

Great feeling!

I've been dealing with the awful starter on my 81 Virago. Put on a new 4 brush motor, but that didn't help much. If the gear that engages the flywheel isn't too worn, you might have some luck adding tension to that Y shaped clip on it. It helps ensure the gear makes it all the way down the bendix to fully engage the flywheel before it starts to spin. There are clip kits that you can buy, but I just sort of squeezed mine in my vice a little to make it grip the gear tighter. Worked wonders. Just be careful not to crush it too much and snap the thing.

Awesome build by the way, I'm stealing your tank riser dimensions for my own build!

Perfect! That is why I posted it. You may want to do it in a slightly thicker steel. Mine has become a little distorted over time. I still have some tweaks to fix here and there and that is one of them. Now that my friend has a mill, I can send him drawings and get parts back. It usually only costs me lunch at a Thai restaurant...

Good luck

As my Grandfather would say. That is "absolutely beautiful!" Great work man! So much motivation to finish mine.

Re: 82 Virago 750 Project Cafe

Maybe I missed it (actually I'm too lazy to go and re-read the mere 8 pages again), but what did you do for jetting with the new 2-1 exhaust and the open air filter?

Bike looks awesome by the way. Very well done.

Thanks!

I haven't messed with the jetting yet. My carb guy has been doing small adjustments and it runs really well. I'm kinda waiting to make sure before I pull the carbs which is a huge pain and is going to chip up my paint and take 3 hours of my life every time that I will not be able to get back... I have also been debating a pre filter sock that K&N sells.
