Coast to Coast
Figured why not, pretty much free from daughter...head gasket issue, typical...
Should be just like a gl1000 right lol...
Got as far as unhooking everything...I think...tomorrow I go borrow my buddies engine stand and chainfall, I'm sure I'll need more gaskets than the head so out comes the motor, not sure how anyone could do the job in car.
Anyone for or against head surfacing at home on a plate? (assuming it's just a touch out.)

I did a GL1000 with hand file, plate of glass, and silicon carbide paper. Had to do both head and block (just one side). It's just work if you have the time and patience.

Dykem Blue (or Sharpie) on the surface followed by light wipe with 600 grit spray-glued to glass will show the high points that need to come down.

Awesome, thanks. I've been reading up on it a bit, someone suggested doing the block and head and rubbing lightly to reveal inconsistencies.

If it over heated send the heads to the machine shop. A decent shop will likely only charge you $30 or $40 a side to have them surfaced. Depending on the Km and transmission type do the clutch while your in there. Make sure you have a look at the rear main seal, if its weeping replace it, it's cheep and easy to do. You'll likely also need valve cover gaskets and the donuts that go around the spark plug holes.

I assumed if it was in spec I could just do it if it was in spec.....probably just send it in then.
Definitely doing water pump, all timing stuff, crank/cam seal, etc.

PM me if you have trouble with the timing the DOHC's can be rude if it's not something your use to doing, you'll have four cams and the crank to align. I have some tips and tricks for these old EJ Subies.

I wish the guy that rendered the motorcycle based on these engines had gone all the way and actually built it.

These engines are now the thing to put into the classic VW-based dune buggies since the VW mills are harder and harder to find. Yes please!
