The drawing is much better. Whats the plan for the rear axle plate?
Simple plates out of 1/2" steel with 2 20mm axle holes. No adjusters, just a tensioner mounted to the frame. I'll get them waterjet cut here soon.

I got the backbone bent, notched and tacked in. Its always funny how much time a seemingly simple part can be to make. Whenever you have a piece of tubing that has to fit in between two specific points with notching involed, it can take a bit to get it done.

Anyways, heres a little trick i used to use all the time when i was a tool and die maker using hold down clamps. A penny between the bolt and the surface can stop the surface from being marred. Cant find much of anything thats cheaper that does as good of a job for the money.

The backbone may look like it has far to much clearance, and while i agree that id like it to fit closer, thats about as close as its able to be and still get the motor pulled out. There will be a pair of sandwich type motor mount plates that will fit on either side of the vertical portion of the spine. Im hoping that those will suck up that space visually, and there will be a k&n air filter pod taking up space behind the radius. Since its a single and the carb is angled but close to centered, i had to give myself a bit of room. I still think itll look good.

I still think it doesn't need a top motor mount. Find another custom chopper frame with a top engine mount. This thing is not going to vibrate more than an XS motor and XS choppers rarely have a top mount. Seems like your good frame design is being muddled by an unnecessary part, especially since you don't plan to single track this thing.

Or do it in a more subtle way, perhaps.

Put the tank on it. Lets' see what it will look like.
Who says I'm not going to take this thing down some single track? LOL

I will likely find a nicer way than a straight bar to mount the top motor mount. The bar will be covered at least mostly by the tank. I may do something like what the picture shows and have the mount swoop down. The biggest difference between this Frame and in XS650 frame is that and XS650 uses dual down tubes where this one is just a single downtube in the front. I also do not have the tank in my possession yet. I sent a note to TC Bros to see if I can stop up and try out the mid and high tunnel option before I buy. They are about 2 hours away so I will likely throw the whole frame in the back of the car and drive up there if they oblige.

Fitting with the "bird in the hand" theme, this cr125m tank that i had sitting on the shelf may do the trick in place of the high tunnel wassel. The lines seem pretty right to me. Plus, ill fit in with the motley crue of miscreants around here that use dirtbike tanks on choppers. win win

Hey now, where is the pic dammit

haha you managed to catch me in between typin it on the computer then going back and adding the pics from my phone on tapatalk.

Levi, that looks pretty good. Perhaps a little short? Guess that depends on where you're going to put the mount for the seat. Very nice shape, though. You won't know if you can officially use it, though, untill you get the approval from some others on here. ;D

Re: "A Bird in the Hand" take 2. DR650 Deadtail Bobber

Funny it seems short, but it's longer than the high tunnel wassel I was planning to run. The front of the seat will likely mount not far from the rear of the tank. That won't be finalized until I get the hardtail finished though.

I got the axle plate fixture tube made up. Its tubing tapped with m20x1.5 fine thread. The xs650 rear hub uses a 20mm axle.

I also dug through my stuff and found this dang near mint 77 cr125m tank. I think it'll be the one, just gotta track down the right petcock as this one is threaded vs bolt on like on the 74 tank.

I got the axle plates cut and finally got the cradle finished up. I'm not going to lie, those compound bends into a steep mitered cope tested my abilities, especially keeping it where it would clear the stock headpipe. I think the lines are all playing together pretty well. I'm trying to think a few steps ahead so that everything lays out how it's supposed to. I tried to bend the top rails of the hardtail so that it matches the angle of the seat. I'll hopefully have the bottom frame rails finished up tomorrow which will be the final big piece before motor mounts and weld out.

I’m late to the party but better late than never. It’s looking really good Levi. I’m always impressed with you guys who bend metal to your will. I like the Wassel tanks but that dirt bike tanks looks good too. Lift the front of it just a hair and I think it follows the lines nicely.

Thanks @john83 , Glad to have you. The tank will be adjusted some for sure, its just laying on the backbone in that picture.

I got a bit of a wind in my sails to finish up the tube fabrication on this thing. I will try to have it welded up good enough to take it home with me at Christmas break and possibly work on some motor mounts. The students have enjoyed using this thing as a teaching tool to show tube fabrication etc, but they graduate in January, so its time to move on from this being a teaching tool at this point. Maybe we build another one next year. ;)

I've used this type of joint before when doing some baja truck roll cage work. It may look a bit goofy, but for offset joints, it actually proves to be fairly strong. My engine cradle is narrower than the hardtail, so instead of complex bends this is how i offset it. there will be a few gussets to finish out the final design.
