aftermarket gas caps

Coast to Coast
Anyone try aftermarket gas caps? Something like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fuel-Gas-T...CB750C&hash=item5b5a8faf62:g:tJ0AAOSwKg9dL-UH

The original on this 82 CB750c tank was stuck and i ended up drilling it out.

I'm still debating whether to paint the tank myself (im not a good painter) or to pay. In any case, i assume i should clean the rust on the inside BEFORE it is painted? If so, how do i stop it from rusting, while at the same time keep it empty for painting?

I want the tank ready so i can fire the bike up, but i am really dreading this part more than anything.

To clarify: the tank seems good in that pic, but it has a couple of deep scratches on the middle and cracking clear coat on the other side. Regardless, I plan not to strip the paint as the factory paint is actually quite good and better on there than if I go to bare metal and do my own. Lol

After cleaning the inside, just spray with your favorite rust preventive. I like fogging oil spray like used to store boat engines. Others use 2 stroke oil, WD40, motor oil, etc. Important to do this quickly after drying out.

Guess it'll depend on how bad the rust is. Any varnish (rubberized gas) in there too? I use MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) to dissolve the varnish but caution is advised - that shit'll melt your soul. Metal Rescue is readily available and great for de-rusting tanks - be sure to knock off all the big stuff first with a length of coarse chain shaken around in the tank. And make sure the Metal Rescue is warm too, or it won't work. Then you can use a tank sealant (like POR-15 or Caswell's Dragonsblood) if you like, or just keep the tank lined with WD40 while you're working on it, and filled with gas when you're done.

So you're going to use the factory paint as a base coat? Or not touch the paint at all?

Yes, i was going to use the factory paint as base, since i don't think it's bad enough to warrant a full strip down. There is no rust on it from the outside.

The tank was on a running bike and it was not in bad shape when i pulled it off last year. However, between then and now it's developed quite a bit of rust on the inside. but I believe that should all clean up well. It was stored in the garage, but it still surprised me how much rust it accumulated in what i figured was a dry environment :(

As for WD40, do i need to wash that out when its time for gas, or just fill it up with gas with the WD40 in it? That's the part i wasn't clear on. I don't think i need to seal it and deal with that.

You won't need that much WD40. You can buy it in spray bottles (not aerosols) too - just pull off the cap, dump some in the tank and swirl it around in there to coat the inside. You may want to repeat it every so often to ensure the rust doesn't come back until you're ready to fill it up with gas. At that point you could pour some gas in, swish it around, dump it out and then keep it full with gas.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips!

As far as removing rust, i was going to go with vinegar, then neutralize with a bit of baking soda and bit of water, then try to dry off with compressed air as quick as possible followed by the WD40 treatment.

I can vouch for this stuff. Just make sure it's warmed as it won't work if cold. Plug up the petcock bung and gas cap and rotate the tank every hour or so to ensure that the Metal Rescue covers the whole inside of the tank. You may (or may not) need two jugs of the stuff - once it's turned black then it won't work anymore.

Gotcha!, and you did this before you painted, right?

Also, did you restore the original cap or go with aftermarket? I'm curious how well those inexpensive ones from ebay or DCC work. My stock one was 100% ruined.

DO NOT MIX VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA, THEN CAP YOUR TANK. It will create insane pressure, like enough to blow the seams of your tank. That being said, if controlled, it can pop dents from the tank.

Yeah - do any work you need to do on the inside of the tank before working/painting the thing. Just to be safe.

The cap on my tank is different I think from yours. Either way, the cap on mine was shot, so I bought one off another forum member for a few bucks, stripped the paint, sanded and polished it. Came out pretty good but did take a while -

This is a K model tank (and cap), but my bike is an F model CB750. I prefer the shape of the K tanks over the F's but they do require a bit of massaging to get them to fit.

That same cap is on a number of 80s Hondas. It has a locking strap that goes over the cap. I have that same cap on my FT500 Ascot, as well. Its on CB450, 650, 750, 900, CBX, CX500 and a few others.

Well, considering the replica caps were only $17 I ordered one from ebay. I guess we'll find out what I'm in for once it arrives. Hopefully it seals and vents ok for at least a little while lol.

Took a better look at that tank today. The dent I remember is really insignificant.

Other than the big scratch on the front Im thinking this could be brought back to life maybe with just a good wet sand and new clear coat. The scratch on the front is deep. I might fill that and paint (or vinyl stripe decal!) the middle black, like a racing stripe! And clear coat the whole thing. Really thinking about this approach now.

(I suck at painting and would hate to spend a bunch of money on good paints only to hate the result anyways)

Anyone know a good trick for getting last bit of water out of this tank when cleaning? It looks like both the filler opening and petcock hole protrude into the tank a bit making pouring out gas/water impossible for the last little bit that gets left in there.

I was rinsing it out today, getting ready for metal rescue and it was quite annoying not being able to dump all of it out.

Should clean up nicely. Looking better after just a water rinse.
