Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Few New Pics

If your engine is fresh, I am not sure I understand the reason not to use the original method of plumbing it back in to the air cleaner. I see that the oil would eventually get carbon buildup in the combustion chamber, but this would be a long process. Increased chance of detonation is the only real problem I see.

Some of the catch cans look pretty cool though!

As much a most of the airheads I know talk about the amount of oil that gets recirculated back into the carbs, gumming them up, etc. The real reason is because pod filters mean you have a cafe racer. Then comes the "Shit, what do I do about that oily hose and that dangly choke?"

I like the catch can because you don't get oil mist on your pants.

Boxer supplies have a stainless choke lever that fits directly onto the carb, which means you can scrap the cable and handlebar mount, tidying things up.

that bmw cafe bike you restored... was mine before that "kid" sold it to whoever for that hurricane 600 ... a douchebag named ryan actually did the "seat" mufflers and A headlight... oh and also the tail cowl which used to be the back half of a sportster tank.. i did that taillight THAT head light those turn signals and a clutch ..... that headlight was all i had at the time and was a major improvement to what was on it when i got it... that other kid... blake who is one of my best friends... mildly helped wire in the front turn signals and headlight.. he also helped me have a need to take the swingarm off the bike three times on one clutch job.. he didnt really get a chance to streetfighter the hurricane ... he bent the steering neck landing hard on a wheelie... i actually traded the beemer to blake for two radians.. one running motor in a wrecked frame and one straight frame with a blown motor... i just wanted something faster ... now... i miss the beemer.... lol it was funny i was trying to explain how ugly this bike was before i traded it ... did a search on r65's and was like ... there is ONE r65 on the fucking planet with THAT "tail cowl" sure enough... there she was... the red stripe is a new thing to me ... it was all black when i had it... the guy before me had a strip of the soft side of velcro down the middle ... i promptly removed the "mohawk".....

Hey man,
Just went through your thread. Real solid work, brother. Love this airhead BMWs I was looking for one when I started but none turned up.
Love the flake on the gastank & seat.
Good photography too!

Just wanted to say how good it was reading this thread start to finish. I'm in Sydney Aust and about to embark on a Cafe-issing of a R65. Thanks for the info and I will now have to do the same.

Great ideas and a great finished product. Well done Matt

Thanks man. It's such a fun bike. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I will actually be doing a few more things to it over the next few months to beef it up a bit in terms of performance, so look for that.

If you need any hands-on help, just let me know and I'll hop the pond. ;) Absolutely dying to get back to Australia. I lived in Newie for a few years and miss it every day (not so much Newie... lol... just the general girt-ness)

Cheers

Good god i just stumbled upon this, i have to say im usually not a fan of what people do to BMWs, but this thing is amazing. Helps that you clearly know your way around a camera too! One of my new favorite bikes ;D

This may be a stupid question but I'm currently working on an 81 r100 and it is completely stripped down. I am rebuilding the engine with seals gaskets new rings... And so on. My intentions for color are similar to urs with yellow frame and black. How did u paint the engine ? I understand this may be a silly question but since I have no clue I figured I'd ask
