Hi,
Just found this forum. I have a 1980 Yamaha XS250E which I'm slowly sorting out. It's far from immaculate, but is very original and has a pleasing patina. I've mainly spent my time and money sorting the ignition and carbies. And it seem s to be running pretty well now. I am keen to try a set of VM30 Mikunis, because I can't leave things alone. Other than that, it's my daily ride, and may serve as my wife's learner bike. I look forward to gleaning lots of crazy ideas from the forum members on how I can do the ton. And here's some pics, of my usual poor quality I'm afraid.....

Welcome! Bike looks great - lots of us run VMs so hopefully if you do go that route and have any questions someone will be able to give some advice.

G'day XSpeed,

Whereabouts in Oz are you? I'm in Sydney's inner west.

The bike looks great and is in good nick for its age.

Crazy

It's not as neat as it looks in photos but is fine with me. Very original.
I'm in Canberra.
I doubt I'll be able to deny myself the VMs for too long.

Hi Xspeed, I am currently building a CB450 and I put VM32's on it which I purchased from Mikunioz. They are really helpful so give Tom a call when you're ready and I'm sure he'll be able to help you out.

Thanks Pete12. Good to know. I'll do that.

Welcome along! Brissie boy here.

On my 450 I run stock GS500 carbs which are a nice upgrade over stock, but would also love a set of VM's. I have VM33 Smoothbores on my Katana and it's a whole new world of fun over the stock CV carbs.

Have dealt with Tom at MikuniOz quite a bit for jets and push/pull throttle and other bits and pieces, definitely the place to go.

g'day, spotty from melbourne , i used to have exactly the same bike in the 80s, i can guarantee thats not my one though as mine ended up with no front end and leaning against a builders skip.....it had a hard life

BUT i can tell you it should be capable of doing the ton, mine did it once down a very steep hill with me hiding behind the handlebars and praying hard......it did seize the motor about 30 seconds later but i still claim the ton, we sat on the side of the road for half an hour basking in the glory of ton-ism and all was good to go again, but it must be said it was never the same after that. t didn't help that later that day someone else chucked it off the side of a hill whilst out looking for his own bike that he'd just chucked off the same hill

its end finally came when the gear linkage broke and i had to ride it home in 3rd or 4th gear and burnt the clutch out. in those days stuff like that was a dollar a CC, so i just pulled some bits off it and left it, went out and bought the twin cam XS250 for $250 which was way slower but handled like a dream compared to the earlier walrus model

good luck with yours

I have a bucket fairing on the way and I may bust out the budgie smugglers and go all Roly Free......

Probably remove the top box too

Just a dumbass question but why change to VM mikuni carbs? They won't make much of a difference to performance, if any and will probably make it less easy/smooth to ride.

If the stock OEM carbs are cactus, that's a good reason, but if they work I'd suggest that there may be better ways to spend your cash. How about a 400 motor or building a 400 set of internals into those cases in a way that you can still get a roadworthy as long as you don't snitch on yourself.

Maye just a pair of larger bore pistons and see if Wade or someone can grind bigger lumps on the cam. Tons of ways to spend cash, but it's always better to improve looks or performance at the same time. ;)

And what gains, measurable or otherwise did you get from the carbs?

Don't know, haven't run it yet, but replacing a set of 50 year old corroded diaphragm carbies with nice shiny brand new ones seemed like a good idea to me -maybe I don't know as much as I thought I did...

For me it was more, hmmm thats different rather than OMG!!! :)
Not much gain on the top end if any, but down low its more responsive as CV carbs tend to smooth out inputs.
Im running a pod air filter and even though I have jetted the old CV carb to suit It always felt fluffy and mooshie also getting new OEM parts are near impossible as its a single model JDM bike...
The flatside Mikuni I have has much better tuneabilty, sounds cool and I can get parts for it...Also even though the off the shelf mikuni is running a bit fat at the moe (waiting on pilot jets)
its running no worse than the fully rejetted OEM CV carb... Ive spent more on a crappy bling so I putting it down as a win ;)
