Re: another cb550.

I don't know if you got your battery yet but I run the A123 lithium batteries on one of my bikes. Verry small and light -especialy if you are not using the starter. I found mine on e-bay, look for the green ones with the tabs prewelded on, and try to keep the batterys cool while soldering them together.
p.m. me if you have trouble.

ill keep that in mind, i think im gonna try to make a standard motorcycle battery fit under the cowl (which i dont think will happen with how small i want the cowl to be) but if that wont work ill steal this idea.

so yestarday while i was working on my buddies garage i worked on my bike between coats of joint compound and paint drying. i got the forks rebuilt, new spark plug boots installed, new plugs in, my engine bolt kit installed, rear frame hoop welded on, oil changed, and a bunch of other little stuff done. ANYWAYS, on with a couple pictures.

im hoping to have my seat fiberglassed today, all the tabs cut off the frame and ready to be painted, and try to start it up :)

Re: another cb550.

Very nice indeed, I can't wait until my CB550 is running. Yours sounds great.

Re: another cb550.

Re: another cb550 *UPDATED WITH VIDEOS OF FIRST START UP*

yah, its getting there. the funniest part about the whole first startup thing is that we didnt have spark at first, after about two minutes of hunting around we found that the wires from the points were cut, so we twisted them together and she fired right up. now keep in mind this bike hasnt run since 1985 and i bet this is the reason it was taken off the road.

anyways....today i have a few things on the agenda, first off im gonna adjust my float levels to factory height (22mm), bench sync the carbs, change the rear tube, finish the front brake setup, and hopefully finish the rear sets so i can take it for a blast around the block.

Re: another cb550 *UPDATED WITH VIDEOS OF FIRST START UP*

Good stuff. Enjoy the ride!

Re: another cb550 *UPDATED WITH VIDEOS OF FIRST START UP*

Thanks man.

Tonight was pretty successful. On the initial start up the float levels were way to high which was why it was running incredibly rich and the carbs were never bench synced so the throttle response was pretty horrible, so I pulled the carbs off set the float levels to 22mm (they were at 18-19mm) and bench synced them. I will put the carbs back on tomorrow morning and try to start it up again and see how much of a difference the adjustments made and then hopefully I will beable to start dialing the carbs in since my gauge is now hooked up.

I also got a chance to mount my speedometer hall effect sensor and shortened all the wires for the speedo and hand controls. Also last night I got the left side rear set all hooked up and ready to go I just need jam nuts for the linkage and bent a new hard line for the front caliper and mounted the entire front brake system. Tomorrow it should be all systems go for the first shake down ride as long as the rain holds out till late afternoon.

Another thing, I'm kinda scared by the fact that I dont get much feedback on here, I was hoping to hear more feedback from jrk, troybilt, Von, and a few other guys but I guess it can't be a bad thing either cuz that means I must be doing something right lol. Cheers fellas, I will have substantial updates tomorrow I hope.

Re: another cb550 *UPDATED WITH VIDEOS OF FIRST START UP*

HAHA, its not my house. he insisted i take it for a ride since we had just got the carbs sorted out decently. i dont think words can describe how loud this thing really is. i was a good 5 blocks over and he said it sounded like i was over 2 at most. baffles are over rated.

Even since I joined (Summer '10), the site has grown a lot. I find it tough to keep up with my favorite builds, and it seems like I'm constantly stumbling across really cool projects that I wish I would have known about sooner. Don't sweat it.

Bike sounds great man. Throw a flash light or something on there though man, damn!

thanks for the kind words brother, it really wasnt as dark as the video made it seem, but im picking up what your putting down. i just wanted him to shut up so i took her for a quick spin. the only things i need now are a battery, head light ears, and a headlight bucket that will accept and H4 bulb (i already have an HID kit for it) and shell be road read with a coat of primer and a little more wiring.

Hah, yeah I didn't mean to come across all dick-like, man. I hear you about the lack of muffling...I'm running an open can and baffled header, and it's still an ear plug-only bike. Those frame rails look comfy! ;) What you got going on them?

You seiously wear ear plugs? I'm running stacks with open header and it's loud but no need for ear plugs at all (at least for me). I revved the shit out of it in the garage and my buddy said his ears were ringing for a while but I was fine. Anyways, I had an old 3/4 helmet that I butchered for the bump stop, I'll post pics tomorrow. I'm excited to start messing with the carbs tomorrow and see how she pulls after that.
