BMW 1974 R90/6 Restore (for now)

Re: BMW 1974 R90/6 Restore (for now)

Do i just heat the hub and pound out the inards?

I got a pin wrench and the original hub came off no problems. All the innards come out as one. I tried to get the hub off the Lester rim but it was on there tight. I'll have to get a better pin wrench.

Did you have to heat the hub / preload the bearings etc. to get the stuff out of the original hub?

No I just used the pin wrench and it loosened the stock spoked hubs no problem and everything slid out. I'll take a pic of the tapered bearings tonight.

i'm thinking of putting sealed bearings in there, what's the chance that the Lester races match up with the stock tapered bearings.

We don't see enough beemers on here, beautiful bikes. And thank goodness for rear-sets, with those fins coming out,ha!

This image is one of the reasons I sent my hubs to Woody's in Colorado for a sealed bearing conversion ;):

Hey Tim, the tire that came with the Lester's are 110/90-19 (front) the tire is to big to be mounted with the front fender. If i got to a 100/90 19 you think it will fit?

I'll check my AVONs when I get home.

BMW riders will tell you it's preferable to stick as close to the stock sizes as possible, going so far as to recommend buying inch-size tires vs. metric if possible.

I think I did that with my RoadRiders. Stock is 3.25-19 front, 4.00-18 rear. Might seem skinny, but people swear by the correct sizes. I'm quite sure I bought the 3.25 and 4.00 tires for mine.

A 100 might be too big up front - a 90 would likely be a better choice for fit and handling.

Re: BMW 1974 R90/6 Restore (for now)

Everything seemed to swap out perfectly. I was reading earlier about the races and tapered bearings from those 70's years BMW's being all the same.

I forgot I have a brand new 100/90 19 it's so much smaller than the tire that was on the Lester I bought a set for my XS when they were on sale 2 years ago
