LOL I haven't gone into the thread yet so didn't know that. Now it's gonna be hard to choose, I like your DR too.

Kidding of course, it’s all in good fun.

For anyone following, I’ve withdrawn from the BOTM. The thread has been removed and will be postponed.

The whole thing was tainted and Kanticoy was getting screwed. Who knows who would have voted for my bike because they didn’t like Irk, or the other way around. It’s just not fair.

Thanks for the nomination, and thanks to anyone who would have voted.

Guess I missed all of that? I didn’t mean to insinuate anything in your thread, I was just messing with my buddy Mike (Maritime). Hope I didn’t cause an issue. I didn’t check in there today so I feel like I missed something. Anyway, get us up some riding video of this thing!

No man, you’re good. You had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Hey man, sorry for all the kerfuffle in that thread and even sorrier to see you withdraw from the competition. You built one hell of a bike here!

What he said ^^. I enjoyed following your work and am envious of your abilities. It's a beautiful bike that I'd gladly (and proudly) ride anywhere.

I love the BMW you have built and am sorry you have withdrawn from BOTM. I would like to thank you very much for the great documentation of the build, I have really enjoyed following. I didnʻt get Irkʻs post but DTT is full of jokerʻs so I didnʻt think anything of it. I hope you are not put off future documentation as that would be a loss to many

Thanks guys. I’m not worried about it. I really appreciate the support, but I’m not here for contests.

As far as Irk’s pictures/opinions, I could care less. I stopped drawing dicks in middle school, I don’t want him to like my stuff.

This was my third BOTM nomination, and every time there was someone preaching that I should be excluded because I build bikes for other people part-time (I work full time as a firefighter), and there are always members that support that position. I guess that’s fine too, although I don’t understand how that makes me any less of an enthusiast. None of my bikes have ever been “big-budget” builds, and other BOTM winners have definitely invested more money in fancy components than on any bike I’ve ever built. Anyone can learn to do what I do, and I am always willing to help them do so.

Like I said, I’m not here for contests, but yet again the BOTM nomination shows that there is a stigma against guys like me. It just seems like I’m allowed to contribute content and try to help others, but it stops there. I’d like to say that I’m not turned-off by all this, but I am.

I am sorry I said what I said, but please stop playing victim. You don't care about my opinion. Great. It is what is. But, from my perspective the difference is you got paid $9300 to build someone else's bike. That is a shitload of money and for a bike that is not your own. You can try to justify it all you want. The bike you were competing against is a daily driver where every dime came out of his own pocket. He bought it in pieces at swap meets. He probably has no more than $2000 in his bike.

There will always be differences of opinions and there will always be guys like me that don't want BOTM to be a competition of professionals against garage builders. Should I get what I want? Probably not. Am I always right? Hardly. If the majority (or just Tim) thinks you should compete, then you should compete. Nothing but opinions. As a professional artist, I have been criticized in publications and I've been praised in publications. People have bought a lot of my work and many pieces are in museums throughout the world. But, there is also more crap cluttering my house and studio that will never get bought. It comes with the territory. As creative people, this is the life we live.

I am sorry you don't like to talk to "people like Irk." You actually know nothing about me, so that judgement is shallow. I made a bad joke, and I admit it. It was a prank and never meant to be serious. Then I reacted badly to some criticism. I admit that too. With sponsorship, the stakes are different so BOTM is no longer a place for pranks. We can no longer submit a box of parts for BOTM. Despite all of this, I am not a bad person. You really have no idea what people like Irk are like. Have you ever considered the anonymity of the internet and the possibility that you may have actually met Irk?

You like to point out how much you bring to the table, which I agree you bring an amazing amount to the table. It is wonderful that you have become this good being self-taught, but much also comes from being taught by others, as well. It's easy to become siloed on our spaces and we lose perspective on bad decisions, especially when a significant amount of work is involved. Your brain tricks you into liking something so that you don't have to do it all over again. I do it. We all do it.

Anyway, there's more of my opinion you don't care about. I am sorry for making a mess of stuff and especially for this becoming personal. And please save the stigma talk for Jesus or convicts. There is no stigma against you. It was just a situation where someone took on his own (siloed) perspective and thought he was fighting the good fight for a friend.

Remember, I didn’t start any of this. I shrugged off your joke and made a joke about getting your vote. Someone else went to bat over the whole drawing thing. I’m not playing victim, I withdrew because the situation became unfair for Kanticoy. I agree about his build, and I wasn’t lying when I said he was getting my vote.

I’m judging you based on the way you present yourself on this platform, which is still an extension of you. Are you saying that you’re a different guy in person? Do I know you? I don’t know. All I know is that I try to be a nice guy and treat people well however we meet.

I bring up that I’m self-taught because I try to encourage others to push themselves to learn whatever skills they’d like to obtain. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you can’t learn something because a teacher is out of reach. If you interpret this message as me bragging about what I bring to the table, sorry.

I still argue the “professional builder” title. I don’t consider myself that. You’ve probably built at least twice as many bikes as me. Where you you keep them all? Did you sell any? What’s the difference in getting money before or after? Are you eligible for BOTM?

Btw, I still work out of my garage.

You really should read what I wrote again. No blame to you. Of all the bikes I’ve built, I sold one. I had $800 in it and sold it for $1200. Then I turned around and spent $400 on a DR370. Every other bike I have either chopped up and turned into something else, traded it for another bike, or I still have it. My CB750 chopper’s engine has been in three frames. My barn has 9 bikes in it. My carport has 4. I’ve never seen you not do a thread on here that wasn’t a customer bike, so sorry I took that as you being pro builder.

Okay, the apologies have come and gone. I won’t fill your threads with any more of this stuff. Best.

Maybe a clear set of requirements for BOTM, voted on by members would settle this?

Personally, I had no problem with that BMW and I would have probably voted for it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

As far as guidelines, I’ll leave that up to the moderators. I’d think that it’s probably so rare an issue that it’s not worth making any changes.

Since there’s been some discussion on what exactly I do “professionally” I thought I share a couple of fun customer projects I just finished up.

First is this all aluminum marine hard-top. The customer wanted it to be strong enough that people could climb on top and jump off. I design tube structures using Bemd-Tech Pro.

Last night I just finished up some fender modifications on this sweet Mitsubishi Jeep. Years ago Willy’s licensed the Jeep design to Mitsubishi, and this one was imported from S. Africa. This 1978 model came with the extended front fenders, and the customer wanted them to resemble the earlier Willy’s style. It seems like a small modification, but it was a lot of work shrinking all the old 16ga enough to get the proper radius. The crappy paint is just temporary to get him through the summer. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Nice work on the fenders man. Working that old sheet steel can be tough, especially something as heavy as 16 ga!

Did you heat shrink or use a shrinker to get that corner?

Thanks! Yeah, it’s tough stuff. I was able to shrink some of it with my power-hammer I built a while back, but some of it I had to tuck-shrink by hand. My arm still hurts.

You really want to avoid heat shrinking in cases like this, actually avoid it as much as possible in general. Anytime you heat shrink and then have to hammer a lot you’ll run into problems. I only use it when I have to shrink an area in the middle of a panel. It generally only comes into play when repairing a damaged panel.
