building a better bol d'or - a n d DONE!

Re: building a better bol d'or (super sport for you north americans ;-) )

I think your`s is going to look way more cool than that boring (later black 750 thing)!Great work so far!

Re: building a better bol d'or (super sport for you north americans ;-) )

pure awesomeness... the reason it looks "oem" is the level of care and skill used in the design and fabrication. Simply outstanding job.

well, yes and no ::)

I've got another right hand switch from a CBR600 that will let me turn the headlight on and off (+park), so I've had to do a bit of re-wiring. That also means the Left hand switch (with the dimmer) needs to be replaced - and I've got one coming. It also has the choke switch/cable attached, so that's a bonus ;)

Been on holidays and just got back, so things have slowed a bit. Also about to build a bigger shed to work in, but that means pulling the existing one down first. Which means emptying it. And not having anywhere to work until it's done :-\

Should be fun (not). I'm putting it off for as long as I can.

I've managed to get another right hand switch block off a CBR600 FY (wahatever that is!)

CBR600FYFXRIGHTHANDSWITCH.jpg

which means a new LH switch block to handle the low/high beam ;)

Also managed to (finally) get the paint I was after. It's only available in 2-pak, but I'll deal with that. Gotta wait for a warm day now, and they're becoming few and far between.

Sorry for the lapse ::)

Got the wiring finalised and wrapped, and got around to tackling the speed sensor fitting. Clearance is good, with some wiggle-room left if I need it, and the magnet passes between the active area on the sender. It turned out to be easier than I thought, with a bit of aluminium angle:

Drilled and tapped a hole for the magnet into one of the rotor bolt tunnels. I can't imagine it causing any issues?

The magnet mount hole should be fine.

Can't realy see from the pic, but does the magnet cross over the middle of the sensor or over the outer "line" that is maked on the sensor? It needs to cross over the line to get the best signal.

Looks tidy ;)

Yeah, I didn't pick that up earlier, and I thought the right "zone" was between the lines, but re-reading the instructions I discovered, like you suggest, that it's supposed to hit on one of the lines. As it is, it sort of straddles the inner one, but the air gap is about half their recommended 8mm. It might not be much of a check, but I can spin the wheel and it will register on the gauge.

Thanks hillsy.

It will register a signal anywhere between the lines, but you might find that the speedo will be erratic (at speed).

Try it out and if it's "off" you can easily move the sensor a bit with your set-up ;)

Sweet build. Really gives me some inspiration for my own. Cheers!

Re: building a better bol d'or (super sport for you north americans ;-) )

Well. This could all end in tears, but I won't know if I don't give it a try eh? Some time ago I photochopped a new tail with an LED light unit. I just didn't post it because I wasn't sure I could pull it off, having never worked with fibreglass before. Well, after seeing and reading all the great creations here, I decided to give it a go.

This is what I was thinking:

but with one bar, rather than two.

So I set about making a plug, and refining the shapes, and ended up with this:

Recessed the light unit, and retain the stand-off for the HONDA decal.

Finally got around to getting some supplies, and put some gel-coat on tonight, in preparation for fibreglassing tomorrow.

Like I said, I haven't done this before, so if you have any suggestions/recommendations, yell out.

Hey Ian, any updates on this? This is a great build.

Bit slack eh Rich ;D

I'm sort of stalled at the moment because I'm building a bigger shed, but to do that I've got to demolish the current one. To do that, I've had to move everything out. The 4 bikes I have now just aren't fitting into my space anymore :-\ The only progress so far is an aluminium sheet cut bent and installed as a type of frame-mounted guard. I'll put a pic up tomorrow. I've also ordered a 520 chain and sprocket set to replace the 530 set-up. I was led to believe a 520 front sprocket for these was unobtainium, but my guy just ordered it from the book. Rear is cbr600, so no dramas there. Things have been moving, but there's a limit to what I've been able to do :-[

Oh. I have my paint too, but again, unable to do more.

Thanks for checking in tho' ;)

cheers

This is the inner fender I knocked-up:
fender.jpg

Drilled and tapped a cross-brace I added for the lower mounts, but I had to weld on a couple of tabs for the top two. Which means I have some touch-up to do on the frame. Oh well. I think I'll paint it satin black. Or leave it brushed. Open to suggestions really ;)

Also got my gel battery installed, and some leads made by a local bike guy.

Judging by his prices, he's very proud of his work ::)

Re: building a better bol d'or (super sport for you north americans ;-) )

Not so much an update as an explanation :-\

This is the state of play with the man-cave at the moment. It looks so small here. Looking back on it, it's hard to see how I got any work done in there at all.

manCave.jpg

Permits have been approved, and the concreter's about to demolish the shed and cut the old slab up for removal. I have to shift the three bikes out to under the carport (while still leaving the guys access through to the back yard). Then He'll box and pour the new slab.

In the meantime-nothing is getting done except the usual ebay trolling ;)

cheers

good to see your at it. weathers getting shitty here again so im back on my project. I think I will try to soda blast my jug/s and head before I paint and reaccemble.

Re: building a better bol d'or (super sport for you north americans ;-) )

Got the 520 conversion stuff today. Probably be the first thing I fit when the shed is complete ;)
An RX-ring what ever the heck *that* is ::) Nice gold chain, and rear sprocket.
