Hi Guys,

I have done some searching through the forums and cant find any topic on this. Please forgive me if it has been discussed already and perhaps point me in the right direction. I am looking to buy a reproduction Benelli Mojave tank from ebay. Judging from the pictures they as look very similar in level of quality. Has anyone purchased one of these? and if they where happy with the product they got, who was it from?

Thanks for the tips in advance,

C

If youre talking about the india ones, i was actually looking at those too. They look pretty solid. I was dead set on buying one next paycheck but i decided to go with a different look. They just looked too thin after a look at it for a long time. let me know how the quality is tho! and buy the way.

I've read many have pin holes and rust. Also, you got to seal up that ugly hope they all have on top. That said, it hasn't stopped me from buying one on eBay. I ordered one with an aero plane cap. Should have it in a few weeks and will report with pictures.

The tank arrived today - slick with oil. As expected, it will take some work to make it perfect, but overall am pleased. The aero plane gas cap was not connected and have not yet tested it for pin hole leaks. The inside appears to be coated with some red substance - and I don't think it is rust. Also there, appears to be a hole in the bottom that was placed there on purpose. I don't know what that is about and have sent a question to the seller. Pictures attached.

PS: the seller on Ebay was called vintspares7

Does the hole connect to the breather hole for the tank cap? (just blow through it or shine light maybe?) Sweet tank man.

Looks like they blew through with the welder and didn'the bother to patch it.

Interested to see what the seller says.

Looks like a drain for the gas cap well. When it rains or you wash the bike, water will run into the cap well (not into the tank). It needs a drain for the water to escape.

I used a very talented guy in RI to make me a tank from scratch. He did an awesome job. I highly recommend hi. His name is Aaron and here is link for him:

The little hole is connected by a tube to the gas cap. So I guess its that rain over flow thing.

Incidentally - if anyone's interested - I paid $360 - including shipping. There are cheaper ones, but I liked the gas cap.

It looks like flash rust has set in. Not too inspiring to look.

You.....negative Nancy....you!

You're probably right.... Can anyone recommend a tank coating product?
I was actually be expecting to need it. It may be an ugly duckling now....

Fill a tote with a Phosphoric acid solution (Deviant Method) and dunk the whole thing in for 30 minutes. While waiting mix another up with water and simple green then rinse inside with a quart of cheap alcohol... then add 2 cups of premix oil and fuel and really coat the inside and spray the outside and filler with a wet coat of self etch primer, then you can see what you really have.

Looks bad right now, but hard to tell from where I'm sitting.

Cool tank and that's a nice price. I coat all my tanks with the POR-15 kit but everyone will have different opinions.

YES! phosphoric acid works great. I also like Oaxalic acid as its not as nasty to work with, for flash rust like this it will strip it in 30-40 min. dont do the vinegar shit. takes forever and has alot of water in it.

There is nothing wrong with phosphoric acid on rusted steel. A little understanding of chemistry goes a long way here. It converts the rust, but does not eat steel. I can't speak for Metal Rescue. They hide their ingredients from their MSDS, so there's little way of knowing exactly whats going on. At least with phosphoric acid, there is some anti-rust qualities post treatment.

metal rescue works pretty good but its expensive. I can buy enough Oaxalic or Phosphoric acid to clean 10 tanks for $20 I tend to use the Oaxalic because Its super common, even tiny hardware stores will usually have it for removing stains from wood. I had a tank that had some really bad rust scale once that the usual acids weren't make much progress on so i used muriatic acid, rinsed and followed up with phosphoric acid. I ended up not using the tank and its been 2 years with no rust in it on the shelf.
