CAFE CREME - BOARD.....TRACKER

Thanx Teazer,

And all my overseas brothers who have encouraged me along the way, it has meant a lot - especially in the dark days of illness, divorce, parting with my house etc., but I've persevered and been rewarded with a project which is exactly what I had in my mind all those years ago.

I'll carry on with the 125cc engine that's installed to get it up and running while I'm checking out and refurbing the 250 motor that I've just got.

Attached my Italian tax disc ..................... still looking for something earlier - 1920 'ish.

There's an ugly rumour that once the "Phantom Celeste" is finished, work recommences on the Glemseck KZ750 Cafe Racer !!

Evolution ........ the P.O.C. brackets to align everything and ensure under "tank" clearance, then hacked out of 3mm brass sheet.

I want to engine turn them, but currently don't have a pillar drill .. not so good hand held ! And then, they won't even be seen !!

I've said many times along the way - this and the Glemseck will be my last projects [ probably ] and they have to be right ... or at least as "right" as I can make them.

Confession time ................. I've been tearing into bikes and cars [ also for a living ] for the best part of 70 years [ yes, started when I was 10 ].

I've designed and manufactured some of the best replica cars in the industry [ not my words ] and built 100's of bikes along the way.

So how come I made a stupid rookie mistake of not checking all of the head to barrel hold down bolts on my 250 Virago motor ? Yes, the 2 evil little bastards hidden in the bowels of the finning. After smashing seven bells of shit out of the joints I succeeded in breaking some of the fins on the barrel before I noticed the little bastards sitting grinning at me.

Fortunately I'd already oredered a new top end kit comprising barrels, pistons, rings and gaskets / seals for the princely sum of £104.

Never too old to learn or make mistakes my friends ................................

Now you see it, now you don't !

I scored this original 1903 ACU brass badge .. listed under "arts and crafts" on Ebay ..... nobody saw it there - except me ! £3.50 - yes please.

Love that ACU badge and yes, never too old to learn or to make silly mistakes. Happens to us all.

Teazer................ rewind 65 years ..................a 16 year old Beachcomber needed to replace a broken pushrod on his 1959 250 AJS.

Started to remove the head to get to the offending push rod and yet again, the head seemed glued to the barrel. Fortunately before I could do any damage one of our neighbours came past on his Vincent Black Knight and saw me struggling.

He came over to see if he could help, and immediately pointed out the "hidden" bolt inside the tappet cover !! You'd think I'd learn !!!!!!!

The switch-board looks tidy and original, and I agree with Teazer, that ACU badge is very cool, all these little details are going to set this thing off, keep the progress coming! I'll be starting in on a little '77 Honda XL75 I am doing a mechanical restoration on; It's to be my 15y.o. nephew's first motorcycle. Every time I see you guys post progress it motivates me. Boardtrack Racers, to me, are some of the most beautiful and creatively engineered motorcycles in the catalog, I really admire this project of yours.

Luugo, thanx for the kind words - that ACU badge is killer !!!

The back of the brass switch plate is very badly engine turned .That was my plan for the facing surface, but I no longer have a bench pillar drill and it just doen't work doing it freehand.

I have never seen US boardtrackers in the flesh, the closest I've come is the Brooklands banked oval machines of the era. I've also seen machines on the banked track at Monza and Monthlery.

I've researched as much as I can to capture the essence of the era and hope that eventually I will do the genre justice.

Wish I'd had an Uncle like you !!!!!!!!!!! I had to bild my own bikes at 14 !

I WANT one of these sweaters !!!!!!!!!!!

Even if you can find a place to make a replica, one of those racing sweaters would be cool as hell man, would look great to display the bike with and to throw on when you take the old girl for a scoot

Already got the brown leather Jodpurs and knee boots ................... trying to find one of these old helmets [ football ? ]

I've found a company that can custom knit sweaters, I've sent the pix of the period riders in their sweaters .... waiting for a quote.

Any of my US or Canadian buddies come across a brown football helmet as the attached pic please let me know.

I will keep an eye out for something like that TJ.. there are a lot of vintage clothing and antique stores around my area, this weekend I was going to check a bunch of them out, if I see something that matches your idea I will ask them to hold it for me and send you some photos

Many thanx - appeciated.......... TJ

Hedging my bets - I suspect scrutineers might want a chainguard before I can run in displays / beach races etc.

Finally aligned the chain courtesy of my £5.95 Aldi laser ! The chain adjuster / roller works as it should. Well pleased - £4.95 on Chinabay and modified to suit.

The template has been finalised for the chainguard, will hack it out of 2mm steel or 3mm alloy - price dependant.
