I'm working on an xs400, not sure where to start looking for rearsets. Should I be looking at a universal set? Would it be easier to start with a used OEM set? I'd appreciate some input

Not sure there is an XS400 specific kit out there. You're doing the universal route and adapting, or buying a Tarozzi kit for another bike and adapting. Either way, you will have to adapt. You could also buy a kit from something like a GSXR. Linkages and hardware can be pieced together with parts from somewhere like McMaster-Carr.
