do it, I grabbed the idea from some guys I used to off road with, besides those ammo cans are like 7 bucks a pop from a military surplus or cheaperthandirt.com (hands down the best website for shooting/camping etc)
if you don't already have one.
Thanks, I'm thinking I will probably throw on some filters until I can get around to making up some velocity stacks, since that engine froze up I have stepped back and am taking a little break/working on the house
Alright, back to it. So I had to split the cases to remove the rods from the pistons so that I could pull the heads/pistons off, since a week of seafoam/pb blaster wouldn't even allow the frozen pistons to budge. Figured since I had em split i may as well give the internals the full treatment.
Did a deep clean of everything and replaced the seals, had some extra Glyptal, so I figured i may as well coat the inside. I ordered 550 cylinders and pistons, reassembled most of it, and have it back in the bike, SHOOUULLD get her started today or tomorrow.
So, every time I feel like I am nearing the end of this project I get hit hard with more bad luck...but thats what you get for getting a bike in a box with tons of parts from unknown bikes. My buddy and I took her out for a ride and it was terrifying. I knew that being a hard tail it wash't going to be the most comfortable but shiiitttt it was rough..... got back home only to find out that my forks were locked up. So basically I was riding a hard nosed hard tail. Anyways rebuilt some 750 forks I scored from a friend and figured I would see how I liked the fork gaiters....love em. 750 forks were a plus, because I had the drilled rotors from my 750 (still in limbo) as well as calipers. Check it out.
Well this engine has turned out to be a nightmare, one of those things that if it can go wrong it will. I have built several engines before but I am yet to have the horrible luck that I have had with this one. After putting everything back together the first time i have an intense leak from the right crankshaft seal. So I pull it, split the cases again, replace the seal, reassemble, same leak. So I decided to use some gold bond in there to determine the leak. Cases were warped or something right in front of the seal. Jb weld the little area, solve problem....Im getting excited.
Mean while i decided I would order a mild street cam, been looking forever and finally found a lightly used one for $110. Got everything together, started it back up, ran amazing. Then a CRACK and rattling...could have only been a broken/bent valve. Freaked out, pulled the cover and my new cam is broken and have a stuck valve.
Can you tell which one it is?
After a couple of months of a string of problems never before encountered on one single honda engine, Im saying f#ck it. Im just going to order a cb650 engine and be done with it...FML!
threw in an 81 650 engine, runs like a champion. Faster than any cb750 I've ridden, probably just cause it is so light. The bike is surprisingly comfortable and stable and is a blast to ride....rolling burnouts and flat trackesque turns are surprisingly easy. LOVE IT. Have been having intermittent charging issues, which I have narrowed down to the starter dragging, no biggie, just bumpstart if it becomes a problem
Thats what i thought....changed them, changed the stator, coil, reg/rec, battery, solenoid....only thing left is the starter. It's weird, checked with a multimeter at 5000 rpm plus, its getting 14.5v. But after even a short ride, turn off the bike, try and start it, nothing....ANNNND of course the 650's don't have a kick.....For the life of me I can't find the drain, no drain while ignition off, all grounds are solid....It seems that the only fix for anything on this f*cker is throw money at it...she will dance for a while, then quit, pull over the thong, and demand more.....
Are you using 500 regulator? The reg for EMS is completely different to a PMS one
It should be switching power on and off to generator brushes when the motor is running The rotor resistance is OK?
You do have battery voltage to the brush when ignition turns on?
I much preferred the 500/550/750 set up with fixed coils compared to the brush type.
