I’ve got a lead on some forks for a 99 R1. Wondering if these are the correct forks for a conversion on a 74 cb550

Update : got the forks. Found the conversion kit on cognito. Just have to find another lower triple and start brainstorming how to make my wheels match

Those look like they aren't in bad condition. My first thoughts were that forks from a R6 might be a little smaller/shorter and might look better on your 550, but maybe they'll be ok. I remember @Hurco550 had some forks from a Ninja 1000 that were pretty nice but looked massive. I guess w/o seeing these beside your 550 it would be hard to know if they will be overwhelming in size or not.

The ones I had for my 550 were conventional forks off of an early 1000 ninja, and iirc they were a good 3" to long, but that's a whole different ballgame than usd r1 forks.

I would look at the wheels from a CBR600F as they would best run a 110-17 front and a 140-17 rear. Any wider than that is probably a little bit too much for your chassis. I also suspect that a wider rear won't allow for proper chain alignment or swingarm clearance. The CBR brake rotors are smaller than the R1, but any of the Honda 6 bolt rotors of the same pattern will fit. The R1 is a 298 mm rotor and several of the late 80 early 90's Hondas are a 296mm. I think the 92 VFR 750 ones would work.

You can run a F2 rear on a stock 500/550 arm with a 160. Just takes a bit of machine work on the sprocket carrier to line the sprockets up, and weld on a stop for the caliper stay. All of 45 minutes worth of work.

I would just worry that a 160 might be too much tire for a 550 frame. But it might work out just fine. The F2 wheels really look good, I had a set on my Ascot race bike, but think it worked a little better with the smaller Hurricane wheels. The other thing is the FT500 or VF500 sprocket carrier is a little narrower than the F2 carrier and will still allow a 520 chain to clear the tire and help with chain alignment. The Suzuki GS500 stock 520 sprocket works on the Honda carrier for a 520 rear and the XL500s front sprocket has the same splines as the CB550 for an oem 520 conversion kit

As it looks right now, I can keep my current wheel and just need to replace the hub and spokes. Cognito has everything I need. Just a little pricy

I never had any issues out of it. Granted, it isn't a race bike. I do quite like the looks of the F2 wheels, and the F2 front end isn't a bad addition either.

You're right, it looks quite nice and for a street bike, I doubt there would be any noticeable difference in performance.
