CBigBore 360 engine in the making

Been a while, CB360 Keiryo Cafe Racer project page is up here somewhere, pretty much finished by now, so it's time for a bump.

A friend got a bunch of bike parts, including a near complete CB360 engine. He thought I'd might like it for spares. I did, but not for spares.

Started to take al the necessary - and some unnecessary, obviously - mods to it and big bore it, too. I'll try to update on here regularly!

Found the old page. Most of the pictures are down...

This before and after (current situation) pic sums it up nicely.

New engine in and first mods done by now.

69,5 mm Suzuki GS850 pistons and a quick big bore job done by PowerSeal. Up to 383cc.

Then got down to cleaning up the head. Just mildly removing poor casting. No idea what I'm doing...

To kill time waiting for the valve train, I've drilled the oil journal. This thing will be bullet proof!

Been having a go at cutting the exhaust valves that came in the other day. Got the intake valves in this morning, so it's going steadily.

Seriously tested my ADD meds on these. This is mind numbing as F... Still, could be worse.

And worse it got. With the innards out and cleaned, I thought I'd have a go at taking the piss poor black paint off.

Modern paint stripper still remains a good example of 'I'm not mad; I'm disappointed...'. I get it, the chemicals that made old school strippers awesome are really, really bad for the environment, but modern paint stripper is about as pointless as a broken pencil.

Started out like this. The stripper actually did impressive work on the side covers, but when it came to stripping paint off the crankcase...

Took almost an entire tub of the stuff to it, and it's still nowhere near as clean as I want it to be.

Looking to get things wet blasted (picture below: left to right stock, light media blasting, and wet blasting).

Did you use aircraft stripper? I find that to be a fairly effective option.
Found a lot of information on that online, but it seems it's not for sale in Europe - unfortunately they don't airfreight aerosol cans either

Will keep at it for now, the cleaner I get the parts, the cheaper the wet blasting will be

With the EPA ban on methylene chloride, aircraft stripper, and any paint stripper that used it is no longer as effective.

All the cases off for wet blasting. Very curious how it turns out. Few doubles in there, so I can experiment a bit. Can't wait!

Now just pack the parts that need super finishing and then drop those off this weekend.

I think you're going to be happy with the vapour blasting - the photos that Irk posts of parts he's blasted look brand new. You planning on painting the cases afterwards?

Got a few previews yesterday. Already looking amazing! Do intend to keep the cases bare. Looks nice and purposeful!

Dropped the gearbox, cam, rockers, and some spares to be sure off at the superfinisher's yesterday. Can't wait to start piecing this baby back together.

Did take some parts from my current motor out to use in the 383 engine. On the lookout for a CJ360 oil pickup anyway, but the oil pump on the old engine is pretty new - bits like that.

And then when you open the engine up... Frig. Seems like I'm just in time. Camshaft hasn't taken too much of a beating.

Only just realized I haven't even showed the bike the new engine's gonna be mated to soon...

It's been an evolving project over the last seven years, probably won't ever be finished, but I actually kinda like that
