Choke lever options

I’m cleaning up my bars and looking to go to an under tank choke cable pull “button”.

Are they tensioned? My choke has a pretty strong return spring. What have others done?

(It’s a 4 carb rack with a linked choke.. just need a standard cable end)

You can get a clutch lever from a CRF450. I've done it on some bikes. Search: CRF450 clutch lever with hot start...

That’s an interesting solution although it requires you to hold the lever as long as you need the choke open.

I’m basing this off videos online of the hot start in action.

That said the previous owner had a frozen choke cable and he said it’s never needed anyway (bandit 600).

I think I’d still like to find a choke pull lever to go under the tank. Nobody knows if they have a drag setting to resist the choke return spring?

How the choke lever works is predicated by the mechanism of the choke. You don't have to hold the lever while you start because the choke mechanism on the carb isn't sprung. When I've used the same lever for a decomp, it automatically springs back because the decomp releases automatically after a few kicks. Nothing wrong with your under tank solution, though. It's a good solution.

That looks an awful lot like a Mikuni choke...

I gotta say I came across the video and didn’t think it applied to my situation but looking again it could work. Now I’m curious!

I think the problem still lies in how much resistance the lever (+\- cable) generates.

I just got a rough estimate with a scale.

It’s a 21 oz pull without the outer return spring (just the 4 inner ones) and 27 oz with.

Hmm....

Although mine are Keihin not Mikuni. Perhaps the parts are interchangeable on the chokes?

Not sure how your cable connected to the carbies exactly. I converted some Triumph Trident Mikunis from cable to pull button. It works very well, with a leaf spring to dampen the activation rod, I could put an indent but it is not needed at this point. Hope the photos help.

I like that spring steel idea. I’ll have to see what I can cobble together based on my carb rack and the choke linkage.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll post up my answer to the Bandit carbs when it’s done. Gonna be awhile with holidays though.

That's a great idea Irk. The Mikuni's that I have for my 450 each have a choke lever, which will be a PITA. Should be able to make up a splitter cable and mounts quite easily.

Apologies Ride for the thread hijack....

No big deal. Hopefully I’ll see some more ingenious ideas posted but in the meantime you might be interested in these bicycle parts. A gyro brake cable and perhaps less helpful a straddle cable hanger.
