Cj360 with scooter carbs

i have some issues with my stock carbs and I can rebuild them and reject them to fit my setup. Or buy new carbs that are easier to jet. And stumbled over some 30mm scooter carbs that are MUCH cheaper than the mikuni carbs. They come with(main jet #135, idlejet #45 og powerjet #32) could I use these carbs?

those will "work" within reason, may need to change some jet sizes. Also, the inlet and outlet on them is going to be smaller than the stock mikuni carbs so you might need to come up with smaller intake mounts.

Thanks for a useable answer. I think I have to try it and save myself a lot of problems with the stock carbs. Prices for jeting for these carbs are 1/5 compared to the stock carbs according to my motorcycle pusher

I think you're actually creating more problems by using basically unknown carbs, but you may save some $$$. Probably going to be a lot of trial and error to get those dialed in right.

What are the issues with your stock carbs?

those Chinese carbs are a nightmare

they tried to get me to look at them and 30 percent of them had quality control issues

the fuel barb will pull right out of the carb body on most of them and if you take 2 of the same carbs they dont flow the same

even the rep of the company trying to sell them to me was embarrassed

Well the problem is that my carbs need a rebuild kit including new diaphragm and with a new open exhaust, I think they need some tuning after that. And everyone writes that it is much harder, almost impossible, to tune these carbs to work perfect unless everything is stock.

How open is the exhaust? Straight open headers, or do you have actual mufflers that are just less restrictive than stock? If they are anywhere close to stock length I would get a rebuild kit and go from there. You shouldn't need to jet up too much for just a change in exhaust, you might be able to get away with a simple mixture adjustment.

Well it is "of course" a cafe race inspired bike and as I don't have the air filters then now I run KN filters and a open exhaust but almost same length as standard

I'm almost certain you can get away with a rebuild on the stock carbs with those pipes. Some may disagree, but you're gonna end up with a lot of headache and heartache switching the carbs out for those cheap scooter units

Also....if you find that you absolutely need larger jets, you can use a drill press to enlarge your stock jets rather than spending a bunch of money on new ones. In the end, if the carbs are usable with a little clean up and rebuild, that's gonna be your easiest and probably cheapest route.

I really dig those pipes, btw. Very classy looking!
