CL350 Super wide wheels and tires?

1973 CL350 Anyone tried to go as wide as possible? Have been playing with wheel size and max width. Was considering something crazy 3.5-4.25 rear rim maybe a 130-140/70-18 and 2.5-3.5 front rim 110-80-18. But thinkin to play it safe just stick with 3.5 rear 130-70-18 and 2.5 front 100-80-19. Goal is to get the best handling possible out of the old frame setup with some looks thrown in.

i think you need a franken-frame, all chopped up bits and parts thrown together in order to get that to fit
 
Measurement wise seems it would work. There is 5.65" chain to swingarm. A 130 tire on a wide wheel is just over 5"? The 140 is almost 5.5" wide so would need some clearancing. The front has over 4.5" width at the forks and even the fender. I don't know I just over analyze everything
 
I have a 1991 Yamaha FZR600 rear wheel in one of my CB350s.....its either a 130 or 140 on a 4.5" rim. Fit is close but it works.

Stock front forks you can only go about 110.
 
Why would you want to hobble your bike with wide tires?
 
Bigger tires means more rolling friction, more rotational mass, and worse handling. Not sure why someone would want them aside from the looks. It's not the like standard sizes are unable to handle the power coming from a 350.

Liked you quote and how it applies to this topic.

Everyone on this site mods their bike for their own reason. Not all the time its for performance.....may just be a look the are wanting to achieve. If you have done this mod before to a cb350 with real knowledge of how it works with the bike.....thats the input the original poster was asking for. I have done this mod and have experience with it.

The funny thing is - my CB360 rear rim with a 120 rear bias ply tire is at least twice as heavy as the 190 tire on my wifes Ducati 1098.


A lot of that is the big old drum brake on the Honda, but the steel rim and spokes weigh a ton as well.

Where has anyone stated these bikes were AHRMA legal roadrace bikes. Dude....take chill pill! OP Asked a question.....question was answered.

Whats the purpose of listing several pics of AHRMA race bikes and how does that relate to his question? Since you posted those bike....you must have built them. Is it time to show my AHRMA race bikes, built by me?

Once again...OP asked a question, which I had direct knowledge about. I hope my info was what he was looking for. No need for useless information being posted unless it helps.
 
When you posed the question, "Why not?", and swan answered with, "Performance.", your response was "LMAO".

The implication in your statement is that performance remains unaffected or is even improved by widening the tires when this is simply not true. My posting of the pictures above goes directly to that point. If wider tires increased performance, more people would be doing it.

Perhaps you should clarify your statement or respond in a more adult manner? Obviously, people can and will do things to their bikes for reasons other than performance (I, myself have done so as well) but highlighting a potential performance issue is part of the reason this forum exists. We all like to run ideas by one another because it's not only possible, but likely that things have been overlooked or under-considered.

One of the very best things about this forum (in my opinion) is that people will not only tell you how to do something but will also tell you why should or should not do something. Any idiot can list instructions, but real teaching and learning is based upon critical thinking skills and understanding theories. So when you say the OP's question was answered, I have to disagree. A question like this is not answered simply with a list of instructions or a picture; other considerations come into play. So when you further add that the OP's question was answered and that further information is useless, I have to disagree on that point as well.

I believe swan's original statement was one that exemplifies what I love most about this forum and I found your response to be disrespectful and against the nature of what many of us hope to accomplish here (learning and teaching).

As for your AHRMA bikes, I don't really care. That's outside the scope of this discussion and I don't care to get into a pissing match with some guy on the Internet. All I'm asking is that you treat other folks here with a bit of respect and not just dismiss their comments offhand (which is blatantly what a response like, "LMAO", is doing).

The rules are for rim widths, not tire widths (unless you count the rule of only allowing tires where the manufacturer specifies which rim widths are acceptable).
 
Well the OP was the one that was talking about the idea of putting big tires on for performance.
Maybe it would be helpful to tell him that the huge tires would have a negative effect on performance


I got the impression from the pics of the race bikes was that real race bikes dont have 300 wide tires.
 
There's absolutely nothing wrong with going up a little in width AS LONG AS the rim width goes up to match. Guys get shitty handling when they slap a fat tire on on a stock skinny rim. Perhaps a better answer to the OP's question should have included a caveat that rim width has to increase too. And appropriate profile selection to keep stock tire height...which will affect rim selection again...

I for one would appreciate a larger contact patch afforded by wider tires, and I fully plan to source wider rims this coming winter.

I'll bet that FZ/CB handles just fine. ;)


EDIT: I'm of course not talking about chopper or 'busa builders who go waaay too far.
