I bought two 1981 CM400's. They both surfaced on craigs' at the same time, in about the same salvageable condition (with titles). So, for under $500.00 for the pair, I picked them up and parked them in the basement. One is a tach and the other a custom.

The ride home. Leaning them together worked out pretty good for the leaner.

The Blue Tach was formerly owned by a woman who managed to lay the bike down on both sides and smash herself up in the process. There were some bent parts and some smashed plastic, but overall very fixable. She signed the title over to a neighbor and it had been in his garage for about two years before I came along.

I've heard you guys like photos so... (I have no recollection of why this first photo was taken.)

Never having owned one of these bikes before, its been great to have an extra one to look at, rob parts off of and experiment with. I didn't do any photo documentation from then until now.

So... here she is now with a new pair of $10.00 moto x bars (Craig's find), cheap grips, Speedo and tach from other bike, Clean tank, Clean carbs, new battery. (Did I mention I was doing all this on an austerity budget that would make Margret Thatcher proud.) New battery position. Remove dents from tank, Swapped out shorted throttle wiring assembly, new fork oil, seat modification, exhaust chop and tape over rust, cheap plastic light (that I broke 1 hour after installing, duct taped back together and look forward to replacing altogether!), chopped fenders, removed electrical connectors and shrink wrapped, pod filters etc... And I have a box of stock stuff like air boxes and turn signals...

I still have a lot more tweaking I need to do, and many parts I want to upgrade when my budget allows. But Im feeling good about the overall Tracker-ish' theme of the bike so far and looking forward to spring so I can ride it.

Winter is back and the Cm saga continues.

After a year of tinkering i now understand why these bikes are available so cheap... but its still fun and the budget decides.

A new 360 tank, Cb900 shocks, Chopped 2 more inches off the seat and angled the rear sub frame, installed headlight (im not sure if I like yet), removed Center stand, and added fork boots.

A new a123 battery, mufflers, speedo, signals, tail light on the way.

Still need to clean up the frame, fenders, upholster seat, paint, rewire, make a tray for the electrons and battery.

I am considering lowering the forks, changing the sprocket ratio, changing rim size, and raking fork 3 degrees back. im not so exited about the Cans on the rear shocks either.

like i said, now i understand why these bikes are Cheap and available. not the best candidate for brat-trackers if only for lack of tire options!... good Clean winter fun and keeps up the hope of spring (-15f last night!).

admittedly, these are not great pictures. the basement is too small to get a sense of proportion and the stance, but im getting there. the new tank makes such a huge difference.

Does anyone know what coil replace the oem and fit under the tank? and will a led headlight plug and play?
