Corey's CB360 bobber build

CThor

Been Around the Block
I'm still trying to finish up on my cb450 cafe project, but after reading through Troy's bobber build thread I had to have something like that as well. So the search began and I found a nice '75 CB360 about 10 miles away and got it for $450. The kid that owned it had just spent $300 bucks he said the year before to have the carbs gone through and the bike all tuned up. It had been sitting for while though this summer and when I took it for a ride it seemed to have a little hiccup in the mid range. So hopefully that will be an easy fix, I know it needs some fresh gas for starters. I've already received some clip ons, and had my swing arm stretched by a friend of mine. I have a 21" rim on the way also that should be here early this week. I'm hoping to be able to get the swing arm put on tomorrow and the clip ons and see how things look from there. Then I can see where I want to move the top shock mounts to. Here is a few pics to get started and I'll get some more tomorrow.

Alright got a few things done today. I got the new swing arm and clip ons put on. I removed the seat and many other small pieces that will no longer be needed. I still need to determine what I'm going to do with the top shock mounts and then cut off the frame accordingly. I am considering trying to do away with the stock controls since I won't be running turn signals and I would just like to wire the headlight to run all the time when the bike is running. Here is a few pics of the progress from today...

Hey Corey, So glad you got that card to work. Looks way better already. Although I didn't notice in the first photos how clean that bike is. Sweet!
Will be interesting to see how you tackle the seat rails and uppershock mounts. It will be all down hill after that. If you were to draw a straight line up the shocks and come up to the top rails that is where my shock mounts are. Every inch shorter from where it is now makes a huge difference. One thing you can do is place the shocks on their softest setting and put the bike on its own (no blocks under) and sit on it and take some measurements. Measure from the clevis to the frame where you think the top mounts might go. Also, have someone take a photo with you on it compressing the shocks so you can get an idea where it needs to go. Go after it man. You are on your way.

Ya the bike only has 9k on it. Everything has come apart so much easier than things did for me on the 450. If the tank didn't have the 3 dents in it I would love to just use it as is. I've always like this blue color on these bikes.

Very cool. Good to get one clean and low miles.
Shorter shocks will work for sure but once it goes lower you are going to have to ditch everything from the top shock mounts back. You will have to figure out a way to make the frame look right back there. Not saying it can't be done. I'll post a build pic of mine but Keep in mind that This photo is with the stock shocks. It is much lower (closer to the tire too) than this now. Wiith 11" shocks my tire can hit the bar on a hard bump.

You will also need a brace near and running between the shocks . I will probably make a U shaped brace to go between the frame rails at the shocks and do away with the straight bar. This should give the tire enough clearance.
Anyhow, one other thing, make sure a cross piece/brace is in place before making any cuts to the rails or cross supports because there will be tension and the frame will go catiwapus. It would be very hard to get it straignt again. Hope this helps

I pulled this photo so you can see how much lower it is running now with 11" shocks. Sucker is low. That is a 1" board under the kick stand mount (not the kick stand, lol) Of course the top shock mounts are almost just above the top seat rail and sit further forward than stock. I'd guess the top shock mounts are 1-1.5" or maybe even 2" higher and further forward than stock.
Also, as far as ground clearance goes I think I measured 2" of clearance at the kick stand mount and about 4" to the frame.

Edit: looking at your photos again I'd guess that my shock mounts are a good 2" higher and forward than stock.
I'd try putting your springs on the soft setting so that you can get some measure ments. If you still can't compress enough to measure remove one of the shocks. Just so you can get some measurements. That will tell the big story for you. Can't wait to see what you come up with

haha ha there is going to be a mess of us rocking this look... only i have cut and bobbed out my frame as well... should be cool!
i am digging this bike like i was troys man! 21 is the way to go!

Hahahaha, Joe you are my man!
Your 350 will be kick ass for sure. Each one of these bikes will have their own look and I can't wait to see how they all turn out. Yep there are going to be a few of them terrorizing the streets. I can't wait.
I think I spend more time on pm then on the threads, hahaha, but that is cool. I don't mind at all. Kinda like top secret stuff i guess. I love it.

Alright I got a couple more things done. I pulled the air filters and battery out yesterday. My 21" wheel showed up today so I got that mounted up. I was surprised how easy it was to do. I just reused the axle from my cb wheel and then had to make a couple spacers to center the wheel. I was hoping to get some cutting done on the frame today, but I spent most of the day scooping snow and snow blowing at my grandmas. Then when I got time to work on the bike my propane tank ran out and getting the wheel on was enough time in the cold for me. Here is a couple pics....

That 21 looks killer! You got an awesome deal! I didn't think about a brake hub on the right side. Will that effect the hub stay?
Alright, Kick that puppy of the stand and let's see how she sits ;D (take the shocks off the stiff setting first though)

Almost forgot: v Stacks= looking good! you will want to change out that old rectifier. Cheap to do at radio shack (under $5 but you have to wire it) or here: http://oregonmotorcycleparts.com/rectifiers.html

I switched the wheel around since the pictures after looking up how it is mounted on the XL250. I do need to pick up a new rectifier still. I did that on the other two bikes I have also. Just haven't really gotten into the wiring yet. I think a buddy of mine is coming over to hang out and help on the bike. I'll try to get a couple pictures of me on it then. Here is a pic to show how the brake line is on the XL.. There isn't any spot to bolt a bracket to hold the hub like on the CL's...

So I got bored and decided to go hack off part of the frame and I adjusted the shocks to their lowest setting and snapped some pics of the bike off the center stand. Hopefully tomorrow I can figure out what I'm doing with the top shock mounts. I have an idea of how to do, hopefully that works out for me. Also I need to make something to hold the front hub in place. I have an idea for that too and I'll try to get that done tomorrow as well.

Looking good! That 21 is so stellar!
Could just cap it back there and keep the mounts where they are at like you mentioned before. After looking at it I think that would look good too. Then all you would have to do is build a strong brace running between the seat rails.

I was thinking that too, I'll have to even them out a little since I didn't get them cut exactly the same. I may just wait until I get some shorter shocks and see how it sits like that before I go through the trouble of moving the stock mounts.

But you don't even have to wait that long. Just sit on it and compress. Then measure out 10"or 11" at the shocks. Have someone take some photos. Or better yet have them sit on it and you measure and take the photos. But hell, I think it looks really good like that. Just needs capped then finished off with some bracing. I think with 11" shocks it will be about perfect.

the 21 is sick! is that off the XL? the axel was the same size (bearings?) i was going to lace a harley 21 to mine but hell if i can do that i woudl much rather do that... is that drum? i cna not tell from the picture of it on the bike (using my phone)
let me know man that would save me a ton of time lacing and buying spokes... this way i can just get the rim and unlace and powder it... i bet the whole rim would run me what the 21 cnverson spokes would!!! that is dope as hell!
