CT70 restomod/grom killer

Coast to Coast
I have bad habits. Since my first project (which was a terrible example of a CB360 cafe racer) I’ve had exactly 39 motorcycles.

This bike is number 34.

You know when you drive so far for a craigslist post that you feel obligated to buy? Well that’s what happened here. There were no pictures and when I got there I figured, “Eh, it’s fifty bucks and I drove an hour.”

It was in a shack with a dirt floor. The kickstand was down and functioning, but it was completely rotted out at the bottom. It had to have been sitting there for long long time.

I had loaded the roller into my truck and was about to leave when I asked if he had anything else to go with it. Oh yea, pieces of the engine in a 5 gallon bucket. Whoopie. Guess I’ll be doing a piranha or lifan install.

Anyways. It’s been sitting in my basement almost a year taking up space. I had too much bourbon the other night and bought some tires and rear shocks for it, so I guess drunk Pierce wants me to get started

First things first. I want to powder coat everything, so no shortcuts on the frame/swingarm.

I don’t really plan on going two up often enough to have passenger pegs, so I ground them off, filled in the holes, and reground.

The frame has some dents that I need to fill in a similar fashion... I’m worried about burning through this thin sheet metal though. Anybody got some tips?

I figured the lowest voltage setting and as high a feed rate as I can run without too much spatter. Maybe do just a little at a time?

Drunk ebay browsing is dangerous. LOL. look forward to seeing what you do. I learned to ride on a 50cc honda mini trail.

I have a mini trail with a zongshen 160HO engine. The thing is nuts. Wheelies at 90kph.

Looking forward to seeing what engine you choose. Last I saw you could get 200cc dohc engines to fit.

Sounds excessive. You got my vote!

I was thinking a Lifan 125 or a piranha 140 both with manual clutch... I want it to be manageable for people learning but fast enough to be fun for me.

More than the 125 and I’ll probably get a new or extend the swingarm

... EDIT: but with the pressure of you degenerates and my tendency to splurge when inebriated... I might go crazy. Who knows

I can tell you that the 140 would be the sensible choice.

While the 160HO (high compression) is a hell of a lot of fun my Z50A has scared a few people away from it.

I have a Lifan 125 in a Z50R and it leaves me wanting just a little more.

So... I wanted to use as many original parts as I can, including the rims. I have a couple large sandblasting cabinets at work so usually rust isn’t a problem.

What IS a problem is original tires on a wheel that’s been outside for forty years. These things are FUSED. I mean, they might as well be the same piece. I tried everything besides burning the rubber off. I can pull the split rims 4-5 inches apart, but the tire won’t give. Screwdrivers, tire spoons, razor blade, it doesn’t matter.

So anyways, I bought new rims.

BTW, Milwaukee knows what they are doing. I was at Home Depot with a Ryobi impact wrench in my hand a couple years ago, on my way to check out, when I was approached by a gorgeous blond in a Milwaukee shirt. She was incredibly knowledgeable about her product and somehow convinced me to pay the extra $100 or so for the Milwaukee. I’ve never been so happy about dropping hundreds on a tool. Weird how that works

Don’t judge me for the adaptors. Sometimes you gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette

Did you see my build thread?

I can tell you that the 140 is plenty! And even with my extended wheelbase and 12" wheels, it's still sketchy as hell!

Yes, your bike is part of my inspiration for this build. I'm keeping the ten inchers though...

I'll probably just get the 125... I like the blacked out look of the lifan anyways.

Did you send yours off to get mediablasted or dipped to get rid of all the interior frame rust?

The guy who painted it sand blasted it but, surprisingly, it was pretty solid inside and out. No interior rust.

I have a couple of luggage racks for the CT70. Because I used the extended swing arm, I had to tilt up the rear fender for clearance. That makes is extremely tight fitting a rear rack (which I really wanted for beer runs). If you keep the stock swing arm, I have a rack that fits.

Awesome! I’m probably gonna keep it the stocker, but I’ve heard it’s a nightmare getting the bushings out.

Oh that sounds like fun. Talking about stupid ideas... I am pretty sure a small smog pump could be employed in a supercharger roler on one of these! ;)

No need for that, there are bolt on kits!
