DEET MB5 - Fully Legal

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

Got a real nice rear wheel (to replace the severely dented one that came on the bike) and clutch side handlebar switch from a member over on the MB5 Yahoo Group. Really nice person, very helpful. Needed parts are all starting to come together. Still a lot to get though: front brake MC, handlebars, headlight, gauges, taillight, turn signals, ignition switch, battery, etc.

Going to start looking around for a suitable headlight and gauges. I don't think this little bike will output much electrical power so I need a small light. For the tach and speedo I may go with an Acewell or its Danmoto knockoff.

Also, I have to buy tires for the Gladius very soon, so I'll pick up new ones for the MB5 while I'm at it.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

Would be a nice size for the MB but I believe they are only 6V. Do they have high-beam? I believe I'll need both beams to pass inspection. Thanks.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

Perry, why would your bike have to pass inspection?
Are you using it for a road test?

My Suzuki is registered in my name with insurance, a new plate and stickers... and it came from Ontario. I thought bikes in Newfoundland didn't need an inspection to be registered...

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

When I went to MR to transfer it to my name, the serial number wasn't in their system. So I got ownership using a 'purchase of an unregistered vehicle', and because of this they are making me get it inspected. They got a plate and everything for me, but are withholding it until I pass the inspection. I think its somewhat similar to if you made a purely dirt only bike into a road bike, they have to get it inspected as well.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

Oh damn... Makes sense I suppose.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

Yeah, I wasn't going to question it since I had a hard enough time just getting it in my name. Was back and forth there three times. Needed the previous two bill of sales from the last two sales. I only had the one and couldn't get the other, so I was lucky to get this work around. Shouldn't be too hard to pass, I'd have it up to snuff before I ever ride it anyway.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Couple of Parts

Smallest 12v light i can think of is the CB175.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Airplane Parts

Still garageless, but picked up two small parts for the bike. A buddy of mine works in the airline industry and gave me two valve caps from a Dash 8. I was pretty surprised that a cap from a plane would be the same size as one on a bike . Nothing spectacular and no one will even notice them, but just like the idea that I have airplane parts on my bike. :) I may even leave them the original colour.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Very happy to finally be getting back to this build. I'm getting settled away in the new house and have my garage about 90% setup. New garage is much smaller than my old one but will have to make due. I have it laid out to best make use of the limited space and will have to try and keep it tidy. Have both the MB5 and CB350 all moved into the new place and ready to get back to work...what a nice feeling. ;D ;D Been far too long.

Last night I started in on the gas tank. Picked up a POR-15 sealer kit last week and did the first step last night. Will be doing the second step tonight and then get it all dried out and ready for the sealer. The drying out part is going to be the worst and the tank design on the MB5 is pretty strange and going to be pretty difficult to get dry in the section under the seat. Will take a bit longer than a normal tank but I'll get it done.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Hey Deacon, glad you are back at it. I will be in limbo for a few months too with a move for work pending. CC Rider gave out a bunch of those caps at Barbor. I guess if you strip the yellow paint they are brass and can shine up great. Check out Kiley's 400F build he has a neat setuo using the wifes hairdryer and a home made wire stand.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Totally forgot about that setup, very cool. Not sure if I'll be able to rig up something like that, but it would be nice. Thanks for the reminder.

That would be cool if the caps are brass, will have to check it out.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Tank is all lined...at least I think. The MB5 tank has a very strange shape so its impossible to see if the liner got everywhere. Much more difficult than a 'regular' tank. I'm confident of most sections but not sure about the upper part of the under seat section.

To dry it out I used a combination of hair dryer and letting it sit on the heater overnight and while I was at work. Seemed to work pretty good.

Next up is cleaning the engine. The bike was primarily used as a dirt bike and it shows. The engine is rotten, so I have to clean it pretty good before I can even remove the carb and oil pump. So that's what I'll be doing this weekend. :)

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Hey Perry did you pick up the tank kit locally or did you have to order it in?

Wondering for my Suzuki.

How much did it cost you?

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

I have had good success cleaning motors with a baking soda blaster. as long as you plan or repainting the thing.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Evan, I picked it up at Napa on Freshwater Street. The other locations didn't seem to carry it. I didn't order it in but got lucky. They just got a POR shipment in the day I got there, only one kit on it though. They will order it in for you though. I can't remember the exact price but I believe it was around $60.

I've seen others using that baking soda blaster as well, seems to work pretty good. For this part of the build I'm just painting the engine as a whole. Not taking it apart, planning on doing engine work at a later time. Just a clean and paint to clean up the look.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Back At It

Removed the carb yesterday for a look. Besides a small bit of rust sediment at the bottom of the float bowl they look really clean. They'll be getting a going over anyway but was happy to see a nice clean carb for once. The ones on my CB350 when I bought it were brutal

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Departing Parting Lines

Small progress this week. I love polishing aluminum but on this bike there won't be much polishing, probably just the carb float bowl and maybe shock uppers. Tackled the carb float bowl this week. One thing about these bowls that annoyed me was the parting line on the bowl lip, I always hate these type lines and took the opportunity to get rid of them while I was doing the sanding.

Before picture, showing the parting lines on the lip of the float bowl.

Parting lines sanded off...mmmm much nicer. Have to smooth out the 'defect' above the drain screw as well.

Lines gone and all polished up.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Departing Parting Lines

Good job Deacon! Turned out real nice.

But wouldn't it have been easier to use a small file, then sand it smooth?

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Departing Parting Lines

Yes, would have been easier and quicker with a file, but unfortunately I don't have one :( Its on my 'tools to buy' list. Didn't take too long with sanding though, I used a pretty rough grit to knock them down.
