DEET MB5 - Fully Legal

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Stick a Fork In It

Started to assemble the forks today. First time doing this for me, so I thought I'd document my process.

Here's a pic showing all the parts (except the spring and top nut that I forgot to put out ::) ). You'll notice the small copper washer in the below pic. Either use a new one or, if you're cheap like me, just anneal the existing one prior to use. Get to see cool green flame too ;D

forkAssembly_1.jpg

First step is to put the small spring on the piston.

forkAssembly_2.jpg

This unit is then slid inside the fork tube with the piston head facing up. It'll come out the bottom as so.

forkAssembly_4.jpg

Then this whole assembly is slid into the fork lower. The trick then is to get the bolt into the bottom. The problem is there is no resistance on the tube so it just spins. The way around this is to install the spring and top nut to apply enough pressure to stop this. After the bolt is torqued down then the fork seal has to be installed. I've seen on a number of forums where people didn't know what side is supposed to go up, so I've included a pic of the instructions that came with my Honda one. It says to install with brand name facing up. Also, this is a tight fit, so to aid in getting it in without damaging it I used the old seal, a modified PVC pipe and a rubber mallet to bang it in. Once seated, the top clip and dust cover go on.

All done!

After this its just the correct amount of fork oil. MB5 states ATF, but I'll be using 15W fork oil.

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Putting My Feet Up

Clued up the pegs tonight.

Thanks again Ari for the parts, great help. :)

I started with four pegs in varying states. My hope was to be able to assemble two good pegs from the bunch. These pegs seem to have a design flaw as three of the four rubber parts were split near the end, right where the metal peg ends. Picked the two best and they should be fine. I'd like to see if I could swap in a nice modern set of aluminum pegs in the future if I get some cash.

So, I disassembled and was lucky to get the right assortment of good parts to make two, with the exception of the bottom bolts.

footPegs_2.jpg

Stripped all the metal parts along with the foot peg bar and repainted it all. Since, the bottom bolts were not the best I picked up two stainless bolts to replace them.

Niice job on the pegs ,Perry do you have any thing left over ?? im looking for the gear shift side 'foot peg' and the tip scraper. I believe there is repo rubbers available

Re: Project DEET- Mini Smoker - Putting My Feet Up

Sure do, I have all bits for two pegs (left and right). The bolts in the picture are no good though, either bent or stripped threads. I bought new stainless ones for mine for a couple of cents. Also, one scraper has the bolt still in it. Its rusted in there, should be able to free it up though, I never really tried. Also, not in the pic is the spacer that goes in the bottom of the rubber. I know I have one, but may have two of them. PM me your address and I'll get them sent to you this week.

Here's a pic.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Had a nice morning in the garage mocking up the speedo bracket. I'd like to eventually get a Vapour or Acewell but for the time being I'm going to use the stock speedo from my CB350. Tach is a different ratio so I won't be using it. Need speedo to pass inspection though, so will use this one for now. Once I had the brackets completed I held the headlight bucket up to check for clearance. I may need to bend the speedo down a bit more horizontal to help gain some clearance for the speedo cable behind the bucket. Took a pic of the bucket so I can bring it in to Photoshop and figure out some ears.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Just found this thread, wife can't get me away from the computer! Well done on the documentation and some pearls in there too. The rubbers on the foot pegs sure do look like the same ones Honda is using on the pre 2011 125CBR. Pack/shim under them with plastic from a juice jug to take the flex out of them and firm them up. About 3 or 4 pieces slid in under the rubber will work. Cheers!

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Nice tip doublej, thanks. I think I'm going to swap them out later on with a set of new style aluminum ones.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Actually that would look sharp. May use that Idea on mine, when I get there. What about rear pegs as they are almost always aluminium.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

The rear pegs from my Gladius could possible work. I never use them so I could just remove them. Good idea.

Snow storm on a Saturday means kids activities are cancelled so I can spend some time in the garage

Gave the chain a real good cleaning and is now hanging to dry. Will lube it up once its dry so the rust doesn't set in. Finished painting the speedo and got it installed. Also, got one rear shock put back together. This took quite a bit of time since I didn't want to scratch the paint on the springs. I wrapped the spring compressor parts in electric tape to help the matter, but still made a bit of damage. Not too bad though, I'll just touch these bits up. Only have one done for now, will probably tackle the other one tomorrow.

Like my bunny blanket? :p :p My youngest is six years old, but I still have a number of these old blankets, from when they were young, saved for the garage. They are nice and soft, great for final assembly type activities.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Nice looking shock! Is it stock? I like the slim proportions. I just ordered a set of Sebac shocks. They look to have similar proportions. They are moped shocks from Treatland.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Yeah, they're stock. I don't know how usable they're going to be as I haven't ridden the bike yet. May need to pick up a new set once I get it on the road. Those Sebac's look real nice. Good price too.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Second shock assembled and both put on bike with swingarm to see how it looks.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

I think I have one from the 350. I'll dig it out and check the length today and get back to you.

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Umphh :( that won't work MB5 cable is 30''
these guys have them http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Honda/MB_50_S/80-82/#CABLES
price is not bad ,, but the shipping???

PM me your shipping address i will send the spring

Re: DEET MB5 - Speedo Mockup

Well that sucks. I just checked the CB350 speedo cable and its 33" and does fit and work. How about the MB5 speedo cable, does it have the same end fitting?
