Dirty Dan's 350F Build

Dirty Dan

Tasty waves and a cool buzz.
Well, this is long past due, seeing as I've had the bike for about a year now... but hey, better late than never right?

These first few posts are going to be me showing you what I've done so far. I'll keep updating from here on out.

This is my first bike, though I've been hanging around cars my whole life. My dad got me interested when I was young, and I haven't stopped obsessing over anything with an engine since.

Here she is the day I picked her up:

It was exactly what I was looking for. I have a thing for the smaller CC Honda's. It wasn't that pretty, but it felt like she had good compression and I couldn't stick my arm (fingers?) through any spots of rust.

Pretty soon after I found the first one I found another, cheaper, 350F. Figured I could use a parts bike so I picked it up. It was in similar if not better shape (it's the black one in front):

As I stated, the black one was in better shape so the original bike turned into the parts bike and the parts bike turned into the project bike. I got it during the summer, strapped some clubmans on it and bombed around the back roads around my house. Here's how it sat for a summer before I really started to tear into it:

I ordered a seat, the squishy banana lookin' thing wasn't really cutting it.

Some new sticky rubbah' (Avon Roadriders. +1 up over factory size front and back)

Then I decided I wanted to do a complete frame off. I started simple, pulling things off and polishing them. I love taking old crap and making it shiny! Before and after:

And then I got real motivated... and this happened:

The internals are in damn good shape, must have been real low mile. Lucky me!

Spent some time lurking around the forums here, got in contact with a member here who had an extra (and incredibly fuggin awesome) seat laying around. Here's his build thread, if you haven't seen it yet I suggest you check it out. The mans got skills and damn fine taste in motorcycles. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=14519.0

Here's the seat:

Another member put these up for sale a couple weeks back, I jumped on them pretty quick:

Got these from a guy on craigslist. I'll be using the wings on the side of the tank, the other badges were kind of a bonus, he gave em' to me when I bought the wings. As you can see, one of them needs a little bit of touch up, I'm thinking white porcelain paint should match pretty well.

I decided I wanted to go a different route as far as handlebars go, I'll be using the clubmans on another build. I got some drag bars I'll be using on this bike. Here they are mounted up on the parts bike, it's the one I scoot around the shop on making engine noises...I know it's a crappy cellphone picture, and I know you all know what drag bars look like.... Deal with it :p

Annnnnnd that's pretty much where it stands. Waiting for it to get a little bit warmer out (Michigan winters...no heated shop) So I can get the frame and everything painted, and the engine cleaned up and put back together and tune it.

I can't wait to ride this thing.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build

That seat is just stunning.
Brown leather is class :)

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build

Channeling Walter Sobchak... That seat really ties the bike together, does it not?

I'm glad Davis was willing to part with it. It's going to look great with the OD green. He sent some scrap leather with it, I'm in the process of creating some wraps for my grips. I'll get some pictures up when they're done.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build

Top end is back from the shop. Blasted and honed:

Funny that this exhaust valve, with it's tiny little (almost unnoticeable bend) was causing the bike to run on three cylinders:

183795_796869505264_30317487_40508706_304743_n.jpg

Next up is cleaning off the rest of the case and painting the engine. The weather here is ridiculous (I'm outside Detroit) I was riding my bike the other day, getting pumped that it was finally getting warmer and comfy in the shop... Then it had to go and dump 8 or so inches of the white stuff back on the ground. So... I'm waiting for some heat before I can start the aforementioned painting.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

Well, It's finally warm so I can quit my bitching.

Here's a little update.

I started painting. Frame is going to be Graphite, same color as the swing arm in the pictures. Top half of the engine is matte black, I'm going to sand the tips of the fins and hit it with some matte clear. Should be able to finish up here in the next couple months seeing as it's summer and I don't have to worry about classes or Jack "I'm a Bitch" Frost.

I know that's gnarly looking, but I had to take a picture right after I cut the first tab... I'm going to smooth it out, obviously.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

Nice! Good to see some movement!

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

this is taking shape nicely. Good work on the motor ;)

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

Cell phone picture's and the shade from the tree make it difficult to see the metallic in the paint, but it's looking good. Didn't really bother painting all the way to the back, it's getting chopped right behind the shock mounts and I'm welding in a hoop.

A little more action

That's all I could really get done on the wheel, I'm going to get out the handheld sometime and finish the two not so polished indents.

I started on my gauges too.
250494_903866831764_30317487_41134207_404005_n.jpg

I'm going to get some gauge faces made, black background with white numbers and details. Found this thread over at SOHC.net, http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=67321.0 I'm going to give those a try, but with CCFL type halos.

I love blue tape. Lots of blue tape.

THROW SOME PAINT ON THAT BITCH!

Yeah I know the oil filter casing is on the wrong way, I got really excited and just bolted it on so I could paint...

Had some fun with the air tools... Cleaned up the fins! 347cc's of FURY

More to come. ;D

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

brosif, did you sand those cooling fins after they were painted? I just did a matte job on my engine and was thinking about doing that but... wouldn't it be more prone to chipping etc> like a weak point in the paint. bare metal and what not.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

Brostaff,

I did sand them after I painted. I was thinking that same thing, I'm sure the paints not as strong as it was before I sanded them down. I've been tossing around the idea of throwing a matte clear over the top, seeing as mines a matte job too. But here's the thing, it was a relatively chap spray bomb job, if it starts to crack, I'll do it again.

... or I could just get the matte clear, I don't know :p I kinda play things by ear.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

Once the paint cures it should stick fine. As long as prep was good. Looks nice.

Re: Dirty Dans angry little 350F build - Slowest build thread ever...

Looking more like a motorcycle... Hope be riding it this weekend. I'm STOKED.

Pretty sure I'm going to be going with an olive drab over the top of this black. Plan is to lay down some tape before I spray the OD and replicate the factory 350F tank stripes, but in black.

Still have to chop the back of the frame and get my seat mounted and rear hoop together, annnd I need to bend up a battery tray/box and a electronics tray

Once it's all together I'll break out my actual camera and get some better pictures.
