Embarrassing Question - Leads to Regulator/Rectifier

dcwp

Coast to Coast
Um, this is pretty stupid of me, but...

I was splicing wires to extend the leads on my regulator rectifier (from alternator) since I'm moving my electronics around. There are three leads, all yellow. So as to not lose track of which wire was which (and to make it easier to shrinktube them), I cut them all at different places. Good so far.

Problem is that I've spliced in the new wire on one end and then I put shrinktube over the joints to protect them. Only I forgot to mark the spliced wire to remind myself of which wire is which so now I can't tell. I know the right thing is to cut the shrinktube off and look to see which is which, but I'm wondering if it even matters.

As I understand it, these three wires bring voltage into the unit, which transforms it into consistent usable electricity for the system. Therefore it doesn't matter on this end which wire is which, they all do the same thing. I assume that is why they're all the same color.

Right or totally stoopit?

Thanks

Dan (hanging head in shame)

BTW - it's a 1981 CM400t if it matters

On my CB350 wiring diagram, from alternator: one yellow goes to rectifier, one goes to regulator and one goes to the light panel (?) on the handlebars (where it hooks up there I don't know because I don't have the light panel). Hope that helps.

Thanks for the hint. I've got the diagram for this bike and I'm looking at the other side of the alternator. On my diagram it's three yellows all going to regulator/rectifier. I'm just curious if they do different things once they get there, inside the blackbox on the diagram.

As soon as I get a chance to work on the bike again I'll just snip back the heatshrink so there isn't any question.

Just solder everything up and leave it alone.
If you check resistance it should be the same for any pair of yellow wires and no continuity to ground

Sorry, I should clarify, (if I remember right), 1 yellow wire comes off alternator, but then splices 3 ways (all yellow wires) to above mentioned areas. Sorry, I should have been more clear, it was early and I hadn't had my coffee yet. :)

? ?
there are three wires coming off stator, either all yellow or, yellow, white pink.
They don't split into 3

It's been awhile, but in the loom, there's 1 yellow, 1 pink and 2 whites (that's not off stator, just in the loom after the cover where it plugs in). The pink and yellow go to the rectifier. But before the yellow wire get's to the rectifier, it's split's three ways. From the split, 1 yellow goes to the rectifier, one goes to the regulator and the other goes to the light panel on the handlebars. I don't have the white wires hooked up, but I believe they are for the neutral light and ?? Don't remember what the other white wire is for. What I was trying to say is that there is 1 "yellow" wire that comes from alternator, not that there is only 1 wire coming from alternator. Sorry for the mix up.

I know you guys are talking about the CB350 now, but here's the relevant part of my wiring diagram. The three yellows in the middle.

I just made my splices like PJ suggests, looks like it'll work just fine.

Thanks for the help.

Ok, here's the whole schematic for 1981 CM400T just in case that tease got you all hot and bothered.
