external fork springs?

atx360

Been Around the Block
Ok after searching I cant seem to find any info on how to do this mod?
I really like the look of external springs on front forks. Since im putting progressive rear shocks on my build I could use the springs off my stock rears, which I think is the standard when doing this mod. :-\

So my question is......Do I remove the internal fork springs? and if so how do I take up that space? with pvc? and should I do anything different with the valving?

Maybe this belongs in the 50$ mod thread if anyone wants to do a writeup/has a link to one.

thanks everyone!

Some springs were external and covered by rubber "gators" my cl350 has these and after you remove the gators the springs show its not a "mod" you can simply do with any forks try looking for some scrambler forks like my cl has

I've only ever seen this on forks that had external springs to begin with. The "mod" is simply not installing the covers... like on this Ducati

This still has the lower shrouds on it, those could be removed to show more of the spring. (FWIW the top shrouds are only missing here because it's easier to assemble the forks that way for a mock up, the finished bike will have covers on it.)

This is the same fork with the covers on

It sounds like you want to put rear springs between the top of the sliders and the bottom of the lower triple? I'm no expert but it would seem highly unlikely a rear spring's rate, diameter, and length would all be close enough to make this work?

That's pretty much what I was thinking too - rear springs would be far too stiff and less responsive than proper internal front springs (the difference in length / coils is the key).

You could probably use a light duty external spring with your current fork springs if you want to achieve the look, but it may not be the most practical thing handling wise (unless your current front springs are sagged, then it might be a good thing). And the springs would probably scratch the chrome on the forks making the seals weep in no time.

WELL...I feel dumb! ???
I didnt know there was springs under the rubber boots on alot of these bikes. so I guess I'm goning to scratch this idea. Thanks for th knowledge though!!!

Heres a pic of what I had in mind.........

what forks do you have now? i want to ditch my external spring forks for some internal springs...maybe we can trade?

There aren't springs under most rubber gaiters. But there are some notable forks with external springs like Norton Roadholders for example.

Troy modded his front forks to run with external springs (rear shock springs) on Willow.

Do yourself a favor and read through this incredible thread. Well worth the time invested. Not sure where the front forks are done - around page 34 I think it starts.

Oh, and we can ask Jason at Dime City what they did on the front end of the 450 pictured above. He's at the Timonium bike show so a little tied up. Not sure if there was any info on the Cafe Racer TV episode with that bike in it.

Yeah I thought it was willow that did the rears on front but didn't want to say that cause I wasn't sure...
I've read most of that thread and its INCREDIBLE.
Thanks for the response.

I just cleaned up my forks and did seals yesterday so may be a while before I pursue this.

Quality info for future though.
