Now I'm in business,a friend of mine just gave me his old Linde HeliArc 250, comes with torch and bottle. This will give me many more options when building bikes now. Really excited to get it all set up and try to remember how to use it, been a lot of years since I used one!
AC with hi freq continous (no polarity)for aluminum ,
DC negative electrode for steel and ss with hi freq start only
you can ball the tungsten for aluminum by using a heavy piece of copper to strike an arc on and having DC with + electrode this will ball the tungsten nice and quick
i am old fashioned but have always preffered the pure green tungsten for aluminum
Thanks! I remember AC is aluminium because they both start with "A" but that is about all I remember. Will be doing some youtube viewing before I get started!
For an old transformer machine like that I would grind a point, put a small flat on the tip and weld away. It will create the smallest ball necessary for the amperage you're using, and the smaller the ball the better arc control you have.
If you ever play with a new inverter machine with balance control you'll especially want to do the above. When you don't need the cleaning action you can keep the heat in the workpiece more and maintain a sharper point. Helps on thin things, small things and in corners.
Anyone know where I can buy the parts for this tig torch? It is a Union Carbide HW18, I need the end piece that covers and hold the tungsten in place also need some cups. Maybe they are universal but I can't find much online about the torch.
I had the same problem with an older harris plasma cutter parts arent available....i ended up trading it for another bike because by the time i could rig something the time and money would have been better spent on a new unit that consumables are available for
