FIRST BIKE!!! Suzuki GS450 Cafe Style

I haven't checked the GSR, but either your throttle is set way too high, the throttle cable is snagged, there's an obstruction in your slides (not likely though), or maybe your choke is open allowing too much air in.

So the slides are those little circle vents that open when you turn the throttle right? Because they seem to be down all the way because when you turn the throttle it rotates it all the way open, so they are probably a little bit open but that wouldn't let the engine idle at 10K! Right?! The first time we tried the bike the choke was all the way open, but then we turned it off and it still happen plus a choke doesn't let that much air in...

I will check to make sure my throttle cable isn't snagged cause it is so long, so it has a lot to run into, I was thinking maybe the idle screw had the slides open, but not even close. Pete also mentioned maybe I have an air leak, but I do not know where that would be at all, this is so odd, and it's so scary turning it over cause this bike with open pipes at 10K RPMs is horribly loud, I am pretty sure the bike would go all the way to red line, but I kill the engine every time before then.

I have a 77 GS550 I recently put clubmans on. I had the same problem as you and the solution for mine was rerouting the throttle cables. At first glance there was no reason the cables should have been an issue. I decided to reroute them anyways and it fixed the problem. I also oiled the cables heavily. I noticed after oiling them it was a lot smoother. I can only guess the PO hadn't oiled them in a long time.

Okay well right now my cable is DEFINITELY not where it was when there was no problem so I will move it else where and see what happens. What do ya oil the cables up with, that sounds like a pretty novice question but hey!

I think the cables are fine, but here is a post from GSR that I posted maybe this will make my problem a little more clear, it seems like a really odd problem...

"The throttle snaps back now, but the REAL problem right now would have to be the fact that when I stick the key in and have the bike in neutral and turn on the bike it instantly goes to 10K RPMs+ and then I kill the bike. The bike WILL NOT rev when it is actually in gear, the reason I fell was because the bike was puttin' around in 2nd gear at really low RPMs and when I twisted the throttle NOTHING happened, but when I pulled in the clutch it revved, so ONLY when the bike is in neutral or the clutch is pulled in does it rev at all.

That's what is the oddest part to me... I checked my throttle cable and it all looks fine, I just rebuilt my carbs again and replaced my orings + put in allen keys, those won't fix my problem, but I did rebuild it exactly how the tutorial asked, so I don't see why I have this problem, but I still have a feeling it is related to my carbs...."

I don't really see how I could put a carb slide in the wrong way, that's the needle looking thing attached to the rubber part right?

It is possible to put them in backwards - but it's also easy to catch If you did. The angled part of the slide (the slide moves up and down and had the needle pointing down) faces the air box.

The circular valve things towards the engine side are your butterfly valves. When you pull the throttle cable, those valves open up, and the vacuum from the engine pulls the slides upward. That in turn causes MORE air and gas to be sucked into the engine. So if your butterflies are shut completely, then the engine should not be able to rev that high.

Okay I am going to check out the slides, but do I really want my butterfly valves all the way shut? Cause right now when the bike is off they are a little open, shouldn't they be cracked so when the bike idles it stays on or do I want them completely shut if the bike is off?

So here are some pictures of the carb slides, mine are NOT angled which is sort of odd, and they have these little tabs I highlighted in red that fit in the grooves also highlighted in red, so it's impossible to put them in the wrong way...

I only have one throttle cable as well... yeah something weird is definitely going on here, my butterflys are a little more open than "every so slightly" so should I slacken up my throttle cable and close my butterflys more? If so how do I slacken up the cable to close up the butterflys?

Okay I will definitely try to slacken up the cable and see what happens cause right now if I hook up the throttle it is probably 1/4" open all the time, and I want to get it closed up.

A 1/4" open? That's HUGE on a butterfly valve. Definitely try winding your idle screw out - it's underneath the carbs by the end of the throttle cable IIRC.

My idle screw is all the way backed out, the reason it's so open is cause my throttle cable must be kinda tight, which part of the cable slackens it? The screws near the throttle handle right? Could a 1/4" open at idle really make it rev all the way up to redline instantly?

The proper cable adjustment bolt and nut is on the carb. The adjustments at the grip are for cable free play.

The tank is off already, but I am gonna have a friend with a lot of experience take a look at my throttle cable because right now all signs point to the throttle cable, a friend of a friend said, "I bet $5000 he routed his throttle cable wrong"

Actually the clubmans came on the bike and I rode around totally fine for a couple weeks and then this all happened after I cleaned the carbs...
