frame up xs650

rockcitycafe

I make things.
just thought I'd share some stuff going on in the shop, I decided the stock xs frame was too heavy and too flimsy for any fun, so I started from scratch, the wheels and front end are from a zx600, geometry will basically copy that of a cbr600, frame weight is about 30lbs less than stock and it's so rigid I can't get any measurable deflection without starting to tip the bridgeport

Wowzers - how did you get the sprockets lined up? Are you having to use an offset countershaft sprocket?

Yup, they aren't close so I'll be looking at finding or making one

No, the engine was already rebuilt 3 years ago, I'm at the point where I just want to get it done

Love it Sean!! It is my dream to build my own frame one day (all bronze welded though). I will be following closely this is right up my alley! Btw, those 650 engines are bloody heavy, I planned to use one for a project once but the weight put me off of it. Keep the pics coming this will be awesome :)

I'll probably do bronze welding next, I think I can make some accessories to cope tubing better, and wind up with no gap at all. this is also a first go at a frame so I can apply what I learn to a frame for my 915 :)

You've come a long way, baby. This is looking like a hell of a ride.

Wow. Very ambitious, looks like it's gonna turn out awesome. A lot of hard work in this build.

Is the chain going to clear the frame? It looks close in your guide pics.

I don't know if it's not optical illusion but the right upper subframe tube doesn't look strait near the weld. Are you building the frame and swingarm on your own? I get the feeling that more than one person is building it.

the chain does clear the frame, I had to do a lot of designing to make a swingarm that would allow it through too, plan on routing the exhaust through the swinger as well, so there was a lot of preplanning on that. as far as the subframe, it's an illusion, the frame has the hoop and then two bends, the one on the far side isn't apparent, but the one on the near side is, they're symmetrical. I'm doing the whole thing on my own, I may talk to myself in the shop, but I'm the only one there ;)

Haha!! Come to think of it. I think I talked to myself in the garage the other day. Nice work so far. What are you doing for the gas tank?

You build reminds of the Harris z's. You know them?
