FRANKENHONDA II the 1982 DOHC CB 750F2 Build

Well, after getting back from Egypt I’ve found myself in mandatory isolation for two weeks. So armed with little more than a runny nose and my new gasket I went to work.

I feel as if I’m becoming a little quicker at going through this whole process, I guess fourth... or fifth times a charm.

I’ll have to wait another 8 days before I can head down to Rexs to grab a Cb 900 oil pump, I have a sneaking suspicion that Victoria will be in lock down by then.

Thats ok because I can do the pump with the engine in the frame, right now I’ll reinstall the modified sump, and cam cover, then I’ll see how I feel about putting it back in by myself. I may have to wait until old man Murphy can come visit

Motorcycle part sales should be considered essential services though. Good luck and stay safe.

I hope so, i guess if hairdressers are considered essential, why the hell not right , I question our leaders judgment sometimes.

I just got my test results back and I’m certified negative for COVID which means I just caught the normal flu from jnr. (breathes sigh of relief through congested sinuses)

Welcome back mate, and glad to hear you got the all-clear. Engine looks like it's coming along really well

Thanks Jimbo, feels like ages since I’ve been back in the shed.

Changed over the little rubber seals on the cam cover bolts, a little dip in some boiling water made them easier to put on, trick I learned from the CV boots.

Put a little sealant around the gasket then boom, top end buttoned back up

I pulled the sump gasket seal from the kit put it on then noticed

she don’t line up, a little perturbed but I’ll have to order another I’m thinking.

I sent Rex a heads up that I may pop in travel restriction permitting in 8 days time, but who knows what will be happening by then.

So I caught up with Rex at a distance of 1.5 m while wearing a mask. He was in the process of finding a reco 1100 oil pump, when I arrived to return the 1100 sump that he lent us to use as a template. We discussed if there were any differences in the oil distributor, and Rex was unsure if they differed between the 750, 900, and 1100 so he sent me home with one for comparison along with an oil cooler to check if the size was good

When I got the oil distributors side by side I found they’re exactly the same.

So onto the motor. Today I established I can dead lift a 750 motor with no oil in it, albeit for a very short amount of time. ( pretty much exactly the amount of time it took my wife to kick the blocks of wood out of the way and slide the jack under.

IMG_9260.JPG

After that point I was on my own. My wife had rushed away after jnr shouted out that he needed to pee. We are in the toilet training stage, so from the heads up we have about 30 seconds to spring in to action.

IMG_9262.JPG

With no more than 2 f bombs I managed to get the motor back into position. Once I got the bottom and front engine mounts in, I installed the exhaust so I could get an idea of how much clearance lock to lock I had with an oil cooler there.

Hopefully on Monday I’ll go back and drop off the oil cooler to Rex who will weld on some fittings and bracket mounts

Nearly have all the pieces to the puzzle now, just waiting on some fittings and stainless braided hoses then we’re away, debating wether to paint the cooler silver or black like the frame, I’m leaning towards black, primarily because I have a can in the garage plus the fittings will be black also

So I removed the pump cover and changed the pump out and replaced the gasket

Then when I replaced the 750 oil pump with the 1100 pump I realised that it required longer bolts. Unfortunately I only had two M6 Allen bolts and I needed three. My OCD won’t let me continue with this odd bolt, I’ll have to wait until Thursday before purchasing the last one.

I took the opportunity to paint up the oil cooler —-BLACK

I think it will come up alright, I also painted up the gear selector black so it looks a little more finished.

None of the fittings or hoses have arrived yet so that will be Tuesday or Wednesday before I can make them all up. In the mean time I’ll work out a design for the mount.

Few more runs on the board, carbs back on, throttle cables connected, chain and sprocket back on and adjusted, side covers all back on, and sump ready for the new hoses.

Took of the rear set brackets realised that I’m most likely going to need to get a new rear brake line made up longer if I want to lower the foot pegs. It’s going to take a bit of designing may not be able to run with the R6 foot pegs

Might salvage some parts off it and re-engineering a new one.

So a few things to design

Well the parts arrived, so I had a crack at making a bracket and making up the hoses.

Unfortunately because the oil cooler was an after thought I couldn’t incorporate the bracket into the actual frame, drawback of powder coating.

Safe to say I’m not even a boiler makers, apprentices , trades assistants, offsiders, best friends, cousin twice removed.

But the oil cooler won’t go anywhere, and there is a lot to be said about black paint.

I put the hoses on for a mock up, and to get the correct length they say measure twice, cut once... I think I’ll measure it about five time’s just to be sure before cutting the hose.

Tomorrow should get the bottom hose ends on and then she will be ready for some oil I reckon, fingers crossed there are no leaks

This looks great Phillip, black was definitely the right colour for the oil cooler. Almost ready for another nomination I would think....
If you're worried about the bracket you could put some nutserts into the gusset just above the cooler and make your bracket to fit there.

Need to completed the exhaust hanger, rear sets, and the plate now that I’ve realised its illegal on the side, once that’s all sorted maybe another nom ;) hopefully it’s not too far off.

Those nutserts are awesome, I can’t believe I didn’t know about these I’m going to look into these.
