FRANKENHONDA II the 1982 DOHC CB 750F2 Build

Thanks guys, just as well the building part is as satisfying as the riding part.

Funny you should mention that Jimbo, OMM was going to be the brand name, would be crazy to name it anything else really.

Yea unfortunately I’m from Victoria, but because their international airport is shut I had to come to Sydney to quarantine first, then I can fly domestic back home. I’m in the right country at least.

So between all the travel, hotel quarantines, delays on deliveries, and statewide COVID 19 lockdowns, Old Man Murphys shed is producing some good news, but in true Murphy styles it has not been without its challenges.

So after I provided a rather rudimentary template, OMM started to weave his design and fabrication magic.

Unfortunately what we realised was that the template I had made up was different dimensions to the cognito rearsets, which unfortunately arrived after I had created the template and passed it to OMM.

So after some internal dialog that run somewhere along the lines of , we discussed the revisions to the design and moved onto V.2

The curve has come out really well, still need to drill in the recesses for the bolt heads to go into and then, do a trial fit before cutting the bosses to ensure the brackets sit straight.

Then once completed, a polish, then some time in December the CNC will be here and we can put the OMM logo onto them.

Lol I had grand plans to have Frankenhonda on the road before July this year, now I’ll be lucky to ride by December.

Hopefully tomorrow some more magic will come from OMMs shed

Here are a few more shots of the unfinished brackets,

They’re really starting to take shape, can’t wait for the CNC to arrive, replicating this bracket will be one of the first jobs done

Thanks, Rider,

I'll pass it on to OMM, he's in the process of designing the final part which is the bracket that the rear brake master cylinder will mount to. I originally had the master cylinder of an R6 but the mounting points are offset to one another, so I ended up finding one of a GSXR 750 because the mounting points are inline.

Update on the CNC eta into OZ is the 21 of Sept, but the whole state is in lockdown where I am making pick-up and drop-off very difficult. With the way things are going, I won't be back from work until mid to late Nov. hopefully by then the world has returned to the "new normal" and the CNC can be delivered and we can get some training from the vendor, before we crash, bang our way through it.

In the meantime, I think I will look at some different designs for OMM

So after finishing quarantine I’ve been home a week now, OMM came around and got the final measurements for the off set of the rear set brackets and we are nearing completion.

The next big thing to happen will be the CNC getting delivered tomorrow, I’m hoping that the commissioning process is trouble free. Although the Murphy inside me knows better.

OMM has already got a design file for the rearset brackets so hopefully they come out as good as his hand made ones.

I've been following your thread for a while. Awesome that you're back at it! I've borrowed a CNC machine a couple of times in the past (made my rearset and footpegs) and I'm sure you will be extremely happy with having one at home :)

I saw those they came out really well, I’m just going through the tutorials for the design software and I’ll have a play today. Hopefully we have something tangible in the coming weeks

Good to see you back it mate. Mine's done, so you're playing catch up

I know and I totally missed it, she came up beautifully too. I was stuck working in Egypt for the last 3 months and got out of touch with the real world for a while, the closest i got to bikes was this little bad boy I use to pass on the way to work

My brother has come up with some logo designs so once we make up a design file should be able to engrave it into some of OMMs creations as well as some of the new stuff we come up with along the way.

Just spent the last few hours having a play with the design software, just took a break, I think it’s time for coffee

A few YouTube tutorials later and we made a cut, granted we broke the bit within the first 30 seconds, but after some conservative tool setting recalibration and the second attempt was successful.

The next project will be to make the rear brake master cylinder mounting bracket.

Start small and work our way into the more complex parts.

Well I had a small win today,

IMG_3224.JPG

I designed the small bracket that will hold the rear brake master cylinder to the rearset brackets.

For a while there I was pulling out what little hair I have when the program refused to let me select parts of my design to extrude into a 3D image... word to the wise make sure that you have in fact designed a closed shape.

Anyway, once I swept the clumps of hair from the floor of the garage I was able to set up for my second attempt.

Thankfully she went off without a hitch, boom, or crash. I’m going to have to look into what is the best way to place tabs, and also remove them.

IMG_3240.JPG

All in all I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, I’ll have to get to OMMs’ garage so we can make the cut out to house the bracket. Then it will be polishing and clear anodising to match the cognito moto rearsets.

Pretty, but maybe a little flimsy for an MC. Brake pedal has a lot of mechanical advantage to press on that.

It’s 6 x 6.5 mm, I guess I’ll find out once we put it all together and I use it.

Best thing is, if it breaks I can always just change the design dimensions and make another one.

I got the gear side rearset bracket of OMM and I polished it up and fitted it to see what she looks like.

I’m pretty happy with the way it ties in with the contours of the frame and engine.
