I'm putting a CL350 back together, and I would like to replace the ad-hoc bolts and screws the previous owner used on the motor, frame, and body with some fresh hardware. I'm looking to buy a variety of nuts and bolts, preferably black stuff.
I found this place, but it seems like they would want me to purchase hundreds of each, when really I'm looking to pick up a number more in the dozens:
Try FASTENAL they offer single socket head cap screws as well as bags of large quantitys.
and +1 to not using the black oxide, seem to rust almost over night once the manufacturing oil is removed.
Oh wow, thanks for the heads-up. This bike will be parked in the streets, and my primary concern is corrosion prevention. Is there any durable black coating (I remember a zinc...)? If not, I guess I'll just go stainless steel. Maybe zinc for electrical stuff.
Yeah you could. It would be a bit of a bitch. and you might have issue with the allen key fitting in the hole afterwards. But a nice light coat should be fine.
Just drill 50 holes in a piece of 1/16 sheet or so, and drop the bolts down in the holes and spray away. toss the whole shebang in the oven. Youll have powdered bolts and a nice powdered metal pegboard hahah
If you want black find a local plater to plate some stock hardware Black Zinc.
Not everyone does it but it looks way better than black oxide and will last a lot longer.
Call me crazy, and I might get some flack for this, but I've used the rattle can rhino liner with decent success. Yes, you can't apply too much or it will be kinda thick, and it will scratch it things are constantly rubbing on it. But for things that don't see much wear I think it looks pretty nice. Plus its like 7 bucks a can. Here's a few pictures of a buddy's stunt bike rear peg bolts and headlight mount.
Spray on bed liner is awesome. Not sure how good it is on a bolt head.....
and you can see in the second picture that the black oxide bolts are rusting already.
Lol. Yeah, The we didn't do the front bolts when we did the others. So yeah, Its a nice comparison shot. I've never done it on a bolt head before, just allen bolts. I'm guessing you would have to just be careful when tightening them down? Either way. I like the textured look.
