Galaxian's KZ1000 project

I love this bike. I was wondering if the shift rod on your rearset being positioned that way ever gets in the way of your foot? I was going to route my shift rod the same way and was just wondering.

oh and as far as exhaust goes after 200 miles and city speed bumps all is well. I am pleasantly surprised but will still try to make a new exhaust and polish up some pieces over winter. I am powder coating the header and polishing the covers in the next few weeks.

Man I love that thing! How is the bike handling? I'm sure it stops on a dime now. Do you know the specs on your forks and rear shocks? What degree of rake did you end up with? I am trying to aim for 25-26. Were you able to set the sag correctly?

The 96 only forks have a ride height adjust. Everyone things its preload but for what ever reason its really just a height adjust. I have it maxed out at the moment. The forks are 29 inches top to center ofaxle andthe bike rides great. The rear shocks are Koni's that came on the bike and i have the preload at max as well becuase of my fear of hitting the header. So far though its been great.

As far as the rake...well good question. I didnt mod the frame if that is what you are asking.

Well, the rake will change as the rear is jacked up or the front is lowered. I think you can measure the angle like so:

Yea, I have too much free time...... ;)

Basically you just need to make a triangle, and to find all angles and sides lengths you only need to know two sides and one angle I believe. Here's alink to make it easier,
http://ostermiller.org/calc/triangle.html
just enter in the two measurements and the given 45* angle and it will spit out your rake. Probably between 24*-27* I think Zeds are 27 stock.

Of course it all depends on how accurately you take your measurements. The fork length and from axle to ground is easy but from top of forks to ground is kinda tricky, I just used a t square and some levels, you'll probably have to remove a clip on.

Hey can you post a pic of how you mounted your gauges? I am using stock KZ gauges too and have an idea for mounting them, but maybe you did it better....Thanks!

i do still have the 650 its in hibernation and perhaps in spring will come out with a 1000cc engine, if i can find an engine in my price range.

I can take a pic of how i mounted the gauges but basically i made spacers and mounted them from underneath the triple clamp. Then more spacers and attached the headlight bracket.

I have a relatively simple solution to your front-end clearence problems (probably cost you about a hun-ski): install a set of first generation ZX9R forks (I think 94 - 97, maybe?) ...anyway, the inverted forks from the first gen ZX9 are 2.75" longer than the ZX7R forks, all other details are the same...*poof!*, problem solved. ;D
Oh, and did you rotate your rear-axle to the bottom position in the eccentric adjuster?...that helps, too...and it quickens the steering just a tad, but if you 'push' your bike, you will notice it.

Badkaw,

i did rotate my adjuster and that did help. My 1st trip on the bike was a 250 mile round trip partially in 27 degree weather. The bike didnt hit the pipe at all and performed flawlessly. I did find i need to re adjust my headlight but that is about it.

So the zx9 forks are the same OD dimensions as the zx7r? Beacuase the 96-03 7r forks are 54mm OD at the top.

Well the new parts came in last night so i will have so new pics for you guys in the next few days. Its part of my improvements now that the bike was complete.

Been a while since I've been able to get to the site. Did you get the forks? I can go out to my shop and check fork ODs if you want. I've got a couple sets of 9 forks and a set of 7 forks. Let me know if I can helpl, and post up pics!

KR if you have a chance to get some numbers that would be awesome. I am still running the 7r forks and at the moment they are working fine but i am getting ready to build my 650 so the numbers would help in fork shopping.

I am very interested in those numbers, as well. I might be getting my KZ650 back.
