Getting your bike on the road in Indiana

Everywhere is thumpers!
To obtain an Indiana title for a used bike you need:
  • Original Title
  • Purchase Order, Bill of Sale, or Sales Contract: State Form 44237
  • Odometer Statement: State Form 43230 (You do not need this if the original title does not indicate mileage)
  • Physical Inspection of a Vehicle or Watercraft: State Form 39530 (If Original Title is out-of-state, you need a local Police Officer or State Patrolman to sign the form.)
  • Proof of out-of-state sales tax paid, if applicable
  • Proof of Indiana Residency (individual title applications only)

There's a gotcha here: if the bike isn't already licensed the BMV employee can't do the Physical Inspection since it would be illegal for you to ride the bike there. So if you can't truck/trailer the bike there, you have to have someone come to your house and verify the VIN on the bike matches the title. The Indiana State Police will do this for free; call the 800 number and ask them to come out. (It may take a while) OR you can pay your local police precinct $5. Go to the precinct FIRST and pay the money, get a receipt, THEN call dispatch and ask them to send someone.

To obtain an Indiana plate and registration you'll need:
  • New Title
  • Proof of Insurance
That's it. Fairly simple to get plates/registration. Some counties require an emissions test. If it's been more than 45 days since you purchased the bike, there are some additional steps and you have to go to the BMV in person. Otherwise this can be done online.
